Title: EMSI meeting Multiphase CFD

1
EMSI meetingMultiphase CFD
  • G. Yadigaroglu
  • Genova, June 26, 2004

2
Actions undertaken
  • At the last EMSI meeting (Trondheim), Yadigaroglu
was asked to inquire about non-nuclear CMFD
applications, but did not receive any feedback,
except information on the (rather nuclear) German
    initiative in CFD.
  • Another e-mail inquiry on 12 May 2004 to all EMSI
    members produced a few reactions
  • Prof. Ian A. Sutherland, Brunel Institute for
    Bioengineering, Brunel University doing some
very interesting two-phase flow work in the
    bioprocessing field
  • Prof. R.I. Issa, Imperial College
  • The prediction of  two-phase (G/L, L/L, S/L)
    flows in mixing vessels
  • Phase split at T-junctions (bubble and annular
    flows)
  • Simulation of two and three phase slug flow in
    pipelines (using 1D transient model).
  • Prof. Cees van der Geld, Eindhoven University of
    Technology Spectral-like Methods to Model
    Dynamic Gas-liquid Interface Deformation

3
Actions undertaken contd
  • Prof. G. F. Hewitt, Imperial CollegeWe have
done a lot of work on application of CFD codes to
    slug tail predictions etc.
  • Prof. Ole Jørgen Nydal, NTNU CFD minded
multiphase flow persons at NTNU are Hugo
Jacobsen, Stein Tore Johansen, Inge Gran, Tor
Ytrehus and maybe more no further reaction
    from them
  • Dr. Hervé Lemonnier, CEA expecting to see some
    work from petroleum industry
  • Letter from Prof. L. Friedel, TU Hamburg-Harburg
  • CMFD can only complement calculations based on
1D code predictions and explaining the reasons
for this if 1D physical modeling is already not
possible, any 3D modeling is then only a
    mathematical exercise without real physical
    background..
  • I am ready to formulate a Round-Robin exercise
on two-phase flow in a safety valvefor
establishing the state of the art an
    interesting suggestion
  • GYs appreciation a meager response should
    discuss possible actions/alternatives for the
future. Maybe, for the time being, EMSI should
concentrate on organizing the ETPFG meeting?
