2
Rice stink bug
The rice stink bug overwinters as an adult. It
feeds on grasses in the spring before moving to
rice.
3
The rice stink bug lays its eggs usually in two
rows on the surface of a leaf.
4
After hatching the first instar nymphs remain
clustered around the egg cases and do not feed.
5
After molting, second instar nymphs begin to move
around and feed on developing rice grains.
6
Generations overlap in the field and both adults
and nymphs can be found at the same time.

7
Rice stink bugs are especially attracted to
flowering rice where they will feed on immature
grains.
8
  • Losses from Rice Stink Bug
  • 5-10 yield loss
  • 6100 lbs/A
  • Losses 305-610 lbs per acre
  • Price 7.50/cwt
  • Losses 22.88 - 45.75/acre

9
When rice stink bugs feed on rice grains from
flowering through the milk stage of development
they cause serious yield losses. The grain below
was fed on during the milk stage.
10
When the rice stink bug feeds on grain in the
soft to hard dough stages the wound opens the
door to bacteria and fungi infection resulting in
pecky rice.
11
The following sequence of three slides depicts
the development of the rice stink bug on
barnyardgrass and the subsequent movement from
barnyardgrass to rice. This demonstrates the
need to practice good weed control to reduce
stink bug infestation.

  • Take 10 sweeps at 10 different areas
  • Avoid hot hours

Thresholds
  • First two weeks of heading
  • 3 bugs per 10 sweeps
