2
The First Virus
  • Founded in 1898 by Friedrich Loeffler and Paul
    Frosch
  • Caused a foot and mouth disease

3
Basic Facts
  • Viruses are the tiniest, simplest life forms.
  • They are considered to be non-living.
  • Viruses depend on their host cells to reproduce.
  • Viruses are named after the disease they cause.

4
Virus Shapes
  • Viruses are too small to BE SEEN WITH A LIGHT
    MICROSCOPE.
  • Shapes Include
  • Rods
  • Filaments
  • Spheres
  • Cubes
  • Crystals
  • Tadpole

5
Virus structure
  • Made up of an inner core and protein coat.
  • Inner core contains dna or rna
  • The protein coat is a protective layer
    surrounding the genetic material

6
Reproductive cycles
  • There are two reproductive cycles, lytic and
    lysogenic.
  • During both cycles the virus injects the host
    cell with genetic material.
  • Lysogenic cycle will turn into a lytic cycle
  • Ex
  • Hiv to aids
  • Chicken pox to shingles

7
Lytic reproductive cycle
  • Virus destroys the host cells dna.
  • The virus reprograms the cells metabolic process
    to copy the viral genes.
  • Many copies of the virus are then made by the
host cell and eventually the host cell bursts

8
Lysogenic reproductive cycle
  • The viral dna becomes a part of the host cells
    dna.
  • With each mitotic division of the cell, the viral
dna is copied and contained in the new cells.

9
Common viruses
  • Common cold
  • Polio
  • Mononucleosis
  • Flu
  • Rabies
  • Ebola
  • Chicken pox
  • Rubella
  • Hiv/ aids

10
Prevention/ treatment
  • Most viruses can be avoided with the proper
    vaccination.
  • Over-the-counter drugs can be used to help
    relieve viral symptoms.
  • Other forms of treatment have been experimented
with and are still in the making.
