6Surveillance - CDI
- PICNet is launching our province-wide CDI
surveillance system - Objectives
- To determine the incidence of health care
associated CDI in acute care facilities in BC - To determine the rates of relapse of CDI in acute
care facilities in BC - To determine the key demographics and risk
factors for CDI in acute care facilities in BC - To determine the rates of serious illness or
death in CDI cases in acute care facilities in BC
- To follow the trends in the rates of CDI in acute
care facilities in BC over time
7Surveillance - CDI
- PICNet is finalizing testing of the provincial
CDI surveillance system - Performing quality assurance checks with each
submitting HA before going live - All HAs and affiliated hospitals have signed a
participation agreement which outlines the roles
of PICNet, participants and the case definitions
and minimal data set - All reports will be will be reviewed and approved
by HA/AC reps prior to being made public
8Surveillance - CDI
- Data will not contain any personal identifiers
- Participants submit data through a secure web
portal housed on a PHSA server - Submitters retain ownership of their data and
will be able to view their data through the
secure web portal - PICNet will provide analysis and reports on data
on a regular basis

- Over the next four years PICNet will be adding
further modules to our surveillance program
using the same platform - CDI Spring 2009

- IHA and VCHA collaborated in the implementation
of a pilot project for the surveillance of SSI - The two HAs have developed a minimal data set and
post discharge survey tool - Results of this pilot project will be used to
inform province-wide collaboration on SSI
surveillance

- Building on the previous PICNet needs assessment,
establish the current status of infection
surveillance in long term care and rehabilitative
care (LTRC) province wide - Identify resources and needs in infection control
in LTRC - Identify priorities for infection control in LTRC

- New Guideline Steering Committee to oversee the
process - Will review other current documents with the aim
to adopt if meets our needs using AGREE tool - Will employ an evidence weighting exercise
using a grading tool similar to PHAC documents - Will be an iterative process with opportunities
for review and feedback from both the working
group and COP
22Guidelines Evaluation Tool
- In the fall of 2009 PICNet will be working with a
Masters student to develop a guidelines
evaluation tool - This tool will be used to evaluate existing
PICNet guidelines, elicit frontline users
feedback and update guidelines as needed.
23VPD/OH Collaboration - Mumps
- PICNet facilitated an expert group developing
recommendations for the Baseline Assessment and
Management of Health Care Workers (HCW) who are
Cases or Contacts of Mumps - Collaboration between OH/PH/IC
- Results of Expert Groups work to be presented
this morning by a panel of presenters - Group plans to make further recommendations
regarding other VPD (e.g. measles, varicella)

- PICNet hosting its third Educational Conference
- Ongoing IC educational opportunities (e.g.
Webber Teleclasses) - PICNet co-hosted an ICOH Conference Workshop Oct.
2007 Occupational Health in low resource and
rural areas - Published by NIOSH (www.picnetbc.ca)
- PICNet hosting an information booth at the CHICA
Conference (St. Johns May 2009) and
facilitating a meeting of provincial infection
control leaders for a second year Network of
Networks.
26SSI Prevention E-module
- Joanne Archer has been working with an Expert
Group to develop an e-module on the prevention of
SSI - Have contracted VCH Educational Technologies,
Learning and Career Development to put content
into and electronic platform - Module will incorporate pre-operative,
peri-operative and post-operative settings (4
chapters) - Module will be ready for beta-testing this spring
27PICNet Educational Resource Fund
- Supports infection prevention and control
education and training - Provides educational grants to members of
PICNets COP, consisting of all health care
professionals in the province involved in
infection prevention and control - Members of COP may make application to receive up
to 2,000 annually to support their attending a
conference/meeting/course - Applications accepted until February 28, 2009
