Zionism the movement to re-establish a Jewish
homeland, gained strength in Europe
in the second half of the 19th century, pushed
by increasing power of Jews in countries like
France and Germany, and the pressures from
pogroms in countries like Russia. Zionists
rejected assimilation some had strong socialist
leanings. In 1897 the first Zionist Congress met
in Basle, and called for the homeland in Palestin
e. The Balfour Declaration in 1917 promised Brit
ish support for the Jews in Palestine.

Sadat to Jerusalem. He encouraged Jewish settle
ments in West Bank, annexed Golan
Heights, and invaded southern Lebanon.

Participates in 1948 war, stays in military,
active in 1956, 1967, and 1973 wars, rising to Ge
neral, and after entering politics, as Defense M
inister. Passively accepted murder
of Palestinians in Southern Lebanon
by Maronites. As Minister of Housing
had accelerated constructions in West
Bank. As P.M. has attempted to
marginalize Arafat into irrelevancy.
His strong win in 2001 reflects Israeli
rejection of two states.
