WHAT IS A LATTICE CRANE?
3
  • The lattice cranes boom consists of a steel
web-like framework that is capable of lifting and
    supporting heavy loads.

4
CRANES IN THE CONSTUCTION INDUSTRY
  • CRANES ARE INDESPENSABLE IN THE CONSTRUCTION
    INDUSTY.
  • CRANE OPERATION COORDINATION IS ONE OF THE MOST
IMPORTANT ELEMENTS OF A CONSTRUCTION PROJECT.

5
HARD FACTS
  • MORE THAN 20 PERCENT OF CONSTRUCTION FATALITIES
    ARE DUE TO CRANE ACCIDENTS.
  • ALSO, HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN DAMAGES
    ARE CAUSED BY CRANE MISHAPS.

6
  • MORE THAN 50 PERCENT OF CRANE ACCIDENTS ARE
CAUSED BY IMPROPER CRANE SET UP.

7
SOME ACCIDENTS
  • March 9, 2001 Glynn Littlefield, killed when the
anti-two block system failed and the ball snapped
from the cable and fell hitting him in the face.
  • December 5. 2005 Robert Ruffner, 34, was killed
due to the crane hitting overhead power lines.
  • December 12, 2002- Mark M. Pease. Mark Pease, 44
years old, an Ironworker, Local 118, Sacramento,
was killed tragically by a collapsing crane.

8
OSHA REGULATIONS
  • UNDER OSHA REGULATIONS
  • SUB PART N
  • CRANES, DERRICKS, HOISTS, ELEVATORS, AND
    CONVEYORS
  • STANDARD NO. 1962.550
  • TITLE CRANES AND DERRICKS

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
  • EMPLOYER MUST COMPLY WITH MANUFACTURERS SPECS
AND LIMITATIONS APPLICABLE TO CRANE OPERATION. IF
THESE ARE UNAVAILABLE THEY WILL BE DETERMINED BY
    QUALIFIED AND COMPETENT ENGINEER. ATTACHMENTS
USED BY CRANES SHALL NOT EXCEED CAPACITY, RATING,
    OR SCOPE RECOMMENDED BY MANUFACTURER.

10
  • WHEN CRANE OPERATORS PUSH CRANES TO THEIR
    LIMITATIONS FATAL ACCIDENTS WILL OCCUR.

11
  • RATED LOAD CAPACITIES, RECOMMENDED OPERATING
SPEEDS, SPECIAL HAZARD WARNINGS, OR INSTRUCTION
SHOULD BE POSTED ON ALL EQUIPMENT.
  • THE OPERATOR SHOULD BE COMPETENT, EXPERIENCED AND
    ABLE TO CALCULATE LOADS.

12
SUPPORTING SURFACE
  • Soil Conditions must be sufficient.
  • Outriggers must be used with blocking and
    cribbing.
  • Crane shall be uniformly level within 1 of level
    grade.

BLOCKING OR CRIBBING SPREADS LOAD

VIOLATION
13
WIRE ROPES
  • Running ropes with 6 randomly distributed broken
wires in one lay or 3 broken wires in one strand
in one lay or wear of 1/3rd the original diameter
of wire shall be taken out of service.

14
LOAD LINES
  • Load Lines shall be capable of supporting,
without failure, at least 7 times the maximum
intended load, except that where rotation
resistant rope is used, the lines shall be
capable of supporting without failure, at least
10 times the maximum intended load.

15
WATCH FOR POWER LINES!
  • CRANE OPERATORS MUST BE AWARE OF ANY NEAR BY
    POWER LINES.

CRANE IN SALT LAKE CITY, UT EXPLODES IN FLAMES
WHEN IT TOUCHES A POWER LINE.
16
SAFE DISTANCES
  • Lines rated 50kV or below, minimum clearance
    shall be 10 feet
  • Lines rated over 50kV, minimum clearance shall be
    10 feet plus 0.4inch for each 1kVover 50kV.

17
IS IT SAFE?
  • CAREFUL PLANNING AND COORDINATION IS VITAL TO
    CRANE SAFETY.
  • CRANE CHOSEN MUST BE SUITABLE FOR THE TASKS AND
    ADEQUATE FOR THE SITE CONDITIONS.
  • SITE SUPERVISOR MUST BE PRESENT AT ALL TIMES FOR
