4Transportation Emissions Effects
- Vehicles account for a third of our nations air
pollution - Increase in asthma, premature deaths, lost
work days attributed to poor air quality cost
several trillion dollars per year. - Air pollution is estimated to contribute to
50,000-120,000 premature deaths per year. - NRDC report found increase in cancer risks w/ old
school buses

6Energy Security Concerns
- The U.S. imports more than 50 of its crude oil
and is expected to import more than 60 by 2010. - U.S. Consumers pay foreign countries over two
billion dollars a week to satisfy the demand for
imported oil. - Much of our oil is imported from politically
unstable areas of the world.

8How do we Curb our Growing Addiction to Imported
Oil?
- Reduce Vehicle Miles Traveled
- Increase use of Public Transit and Telecommuting
- Improve Fuel Economy
- Technology RD
- Mandates
- Incentives for Advanced Technology Vehicles
- Use Alternative Fuels
- Incentives
- Mandates
9Alternative Fuels Definition Energy Policy Act of
1992
- Methanol, or Mixtures of 85 or More of Methanol
- Ethanol, or Mixtures of 85 or More of Ethanol
- Natural Gas
- Propane/LPG
- Electricity
- Hydrogen
- Coal-Derived Liquids
- Fuels Derived From Biological Materials
- Biodiesel (B20, B100)
10What are Alternative Fuel Vehicles?
- Dedicated Vehicle
- Runs only on the alternative fuel.
- Bi-fuel Vehicle
- Runs on an alternative fuel and a
- conventional fuel, 2 fuel tanks.
- Flexible Fuel Vehicle
- Runs on any combination of gasoline and
- ethanol or gasoline and methanol, 1 fuel
tank. - Hybrid Vehicle
- Runs on an internal combustion engine
- and an electric drive train.
- Fuel Cell Vehicle
- Hydrogen is chemically transformed into
- electricity to generate power to run the
vehicle.

12Clean Cities Objective
- The Clean Cities objective is to create local
market places, where people can get together to
learn whats available, whats required, how to
purchase a vehicle, where to fuel it . . . . In
other words, all the necessary transactions that
need to take place for an alternative fuels
market to develop.

20A panic over the fear of gas prices increasing in
reaction to the terrorist attacks in NYC and
D.C., came to pass for a few hours at a local gas
station in Topeka, Kan., Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001.
The owner raised the prices to slow demand, but
lowered the prices a few hours later. Gas
stations around Topeka were swamped with panicked
motorists filling up their tanks.
