Conventionally, Indian car buyers have always preferred hatchbacks the most. Despite the availability of numerous alternatives across various segments, the hatchbacks have always enjoyed the highest demand in Indian market. This preference can be attributed to the fact that the hatchbacks are easier to handle, costs less, offer high fuel efficiency and are low on maintenance. As the most competitive segment in the Indian car industry, the hatchback segment is full of choices.

Two of the most popular hatchbacks here are the Hyundai i20 and Maruti Swift. Both these cars are best-selling cars and often feature in the list of top selling models. Here is a comparative analysis of these two on certain common parameters.
Price Hyundai i20 carries a price tag of INR 481094/- and above. For Swift, the equivalent figure is INR 442000/- and above. Considering merely the cost, the Swift seems a better option.

Engine details The Hyundai i20 is powered by an 1197 cc engine of 84 PS power and 114 Nm torque. Conversely, the 1197 cc engine powering the Swift produces a slightly higher power of 84.3 PS and torque of 115 Nm. Both cars come with five-speed manual transmission gearbox. The i20 has a bigger turning radius of 5.2 meter as compared to the 4.8 meters of the Swift. The Swift has a higher ground clearance of 170 mm, whereas it is 165 mm for i20. However, the i20 has a bigger boot space of 495 liters as compared to the 405 liters offered by the Swift.

Mileage The mileage offered by the i20 is 18.5 kmpl, whereas Swift returns a better mileage of 20.4 kmpl. The i20 has a fuel holding capacity of 45 liters, while the Swift can hold only 42 liters of fuel.

However, the Swift is taller at 1530mm than the 1505 mm height of the i20. At the same time, the i20 has a better wheelbase of 2525 mm. Swift has a wheelbase of 2430 mm.
In short, both the cars are equally good when it comes to performance. However, for a budget conscious buyer, the Maruti Swift would be a highly desirable option
