6What we learned from the market
- ULP market is extremely fragmented due to a
myriad of diverse applications with discrepancies
in requirements (latency, amount of data, range,
autonomy) - 99 of the market is currently served by many
proprietary solutions that serve small medium
size business

9Requirements for hard-to-reachultra low-power
devices
- Low quantities of data
- Low radio traffic
- Long battery life
- High radio link budget
- Openness to the WAN
10Wavenis positioning in the wireless landscape

Low Consumption Long Range
RF consumer
Cost Advantage
11Why Coronis started from scratch
- Find the best trade-off between
- Ultra low-power, short long range, WAN
openness, low cost - Analysis of existing standards no solution
- Bluetooth range too short
- ZigBee range too short, DSSS, and consumption
too high - DECT consumption too high
- WiFi consumption too high
- WiBree ULP but range too short (Body Area
Network) - Our conclusion
- Design a wireless connectivity platform that
meets requirements - Offer Bluetooth extension capabilities with ULP
long range
12Why Coronis will not adopt 802.15.4
- Short range
- 20dB less sensitive than Wavenis (-93dBm vs
-113dBm) - Mesh algo even required for reasonable operating
range - 3 different types of devices
- RFD, FFD/PAN coordinator gt costly overall
network - No direct link between two RFD
- Mesh algo applied between FFD or PAN only
- Less efficient communications _at_ 2.4GHz
- 8dB and more loss at 2.4GHz vs sub-GHz
- Silicon at 2.4GHz is less power-efficient vs
sub-GHz - No rush to develop Wavenis 2.4GHz
13Wavenis technology positioning
PROTOCOL
RF
- State-of-the art wireless solutions spread
spectrum - Bluetooth (FHSS), ZigBee (DSSS), UWB (pulse)
- High reliability, strong resistance to
interference, coexistence capability and low cost - Mono-channel conservative and overdriven
- KNX-RF, Z-wave, io-homecontrol many others
- Easy to design and low cost, but very poor
reliability - No robustness against interferers and very poor
coexistence capability

algorithm How it works
41Devices before network configuration
42Network after configuration
43Basic Rules
- A network is a virtual hierarchical network.
- A new device initiates the connection to become
member of the existing network. - The Quality of Service (QoS) of a device consists
of a combination of RSSI, the remaining battery
energy, the number of routed devices trough. - Initial conditions can also depend on the
application the network topology.
44Virtual hierarchy network topology
- level 0 Network root access point
- level 1 Device directly routed to a level 0
device - level 2 Device directly routed to a level 1
device - level 3 Device directly routed to a level 2
device - level 4 Device directly routed to a level 3
device - level -1 New device (not installed yet)
- Note 1 no PAN coordinator, all devices can talk
each other - Note 2 Each device embeds the repeater function
in native - Note 3 Each device only stores its own route to
the root - Note 4 Root stores all routes to reach node in
P2P connect
45Wavenis routing algorithm principle
- Im a new device (level -1) and Im looking for
this type of device (level 0, 1, 2, 3) - to be
attached to and with such a QoS. - Only this type of devices can answer but will
answer only this type devices with equal or
better required such QoS. If no feedback, the
new device restart the process with new initial
conditions (increased level /or degraded QoS). - Once pairing is done, route is both stored in the
root and in the new device only.
46Device A benefits from the best offered QoS
- Broadcast frames with specific request avoid
explosion of possible received messages - Strong power savings contributor in highly
dense ULP wireless networks with high-sensitive
receivers
47Self-Healing of ULP mesh network
- Regularly test of QoS
- Period is application dependent (once a day,
week, month) - If QoS is lower than required, the device
restarts the discovery protocol based on initial
conditions route history.
48Wavenis standardization strategy
49Wavenis standardization strategy
