- Read Chapter Unit three in the social studies
textbook Meeting Many People. Discuss why it is
important to study history American Heritage - Bring in some primary sources for the students to
look at. Old photos, money, textbooks and a
typewriter. Discuss how things were in the past.
American Heritage - The students will be asked to talk to an older
relative and find out about their heritage. Each
student will be asked to write about what they
learn and share it with the class. American
Heritage - Read Across the Wide Dark Sea American Heritage
- Watch the Charlie Brown film the Mayflower
Voyagers American Heritage - Discuss the life of the pilgrims and how they
lived. Have the students draw a picture of what
the pilgrims houses looked like. People in
Society

- Given a map of the world the students will plot
the route used by the Mayflower in 1620. World
Interaction - The students will identify goods and services in
the school. A list will be compiled and graphed
on a bar graph. Decision Making Resources - The students will be given a worksheet and asked
to identify whether it is a good or a service.
Decision Making Resources - The head of the board of education will be
invited to class to discuss how his job is like
that of Miles Standish. Democratic Process - Students will pick up litter around the school.
The amount of litter will be weighed and its
origin discussed - Citizenship Rights

- Prompt the students by asking about previous
knowledge. Ask, "What does the word Pilgrim
mean?" Discuss the hardships..The Speedwells
initial problems, lack of fresh vegetables and
fruit on board, sickness and death, and the tight
quarters - American Heritage - Have a masking taped area in the classroom that
will depict 1/8th of the size of the
Mayflower-8ftX14ft. Then bring 13 children into
the rectangle. Have them sit down and tell them
that if they were Pilgrims on board, they'd have
to survive and deal with confined space like this
for three months. No running around.- American
Heritage - Take a large piece of construction paper and fold
it in half. Instruct them to draw a picture of
what the Pilgrims were thankful for on one side.
On the other side draw a picture of what you are

- The students will create Pilgrims out of digital
pictures of themselves. Girl and boy Pilgrims
will be made with the head of the student. -
American Heritage - Each student will write what they are thankful
for. American Heritage - Each student will bring in a recipe and an item
to share for the class Thanksgiving feast.

Thanksgiving Poem holding the letters to spell
Thanksgiving. American Heritage - Students will describe the customs and lifestyles
of the Early American settlers in Plymouth and
Jamestown colonies by describing and discussing
food, clothing, shelter, and transportation

9Heres the Story
The 102 Pilgrims set sail on September 6, 1620
from Plymouth, England the Pilgrims in search of
a new land with freedom of religious choice.
There were 62 adults and 30 children. They
sailed for 65 days before seeing land. Two
people died during the trip and one baby was
born. On November 11, 1620 they land at Province
Town Harbor. They cant find land to build. So
they leave and go to Plymouth Harbor.
10Heres the Story
The Pilgrims build their community house on
shore. They look forward to Spring. Half of the
original 102 passengers survive the sickness, 22
adults and all 30 children. In early March in
1621, the Pilgrims meet friendly English speaking
Native Americans. The Native Americans teach the
Pilgrims how to survive in their new land. In
September and October the Pilgrims have a
bountiful harvest. Ninety Native Americans and
50 Pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving.

- 1.  The Indians and Pilgrims brought a total of
seventeen turkeys to cook. If the Indians brought
six turkeys, how many did the Pilgrims bring? - 2. Â There were 14 Native Americans and 4
Pilgrims. Each person brought one piece of fruit,
vegetable, or nut to the feast. How many total
food items did they have in all? - 3.  Caleb put seven ears of corn, six turnips,
four pumpkins, and five cranberries on the table.
Before dinner started, Eric ate three of the
turnips and Elizabeth ate two of the ears of
corn. How many food items were left on the table? - 4.  Destiny has two brothers and two sisters.
Destiny's dad and mom will make Thanksgiving
dinner at their house. Anna is a friend of
Destiny's dad. Anna is coming over for dinner and
will bring along she three kids. How many people
in all will be eating Thanksgiving dinner at
Destiny's house? - 5.  Lauren put eleven squash, twelve potatoes,
and five potatoes on the table. What was the
total number of food items that Lauren put on the
table? - 6.  There were 9 Indians and 4 Pilgrims. Each
person brought one piece of fruit, vegetable, or
nut to the feast. Two of the Pilgrims did not
bring anything. How many total food items did
they have in all?
