  • City States
  • A city-state is a city and the villages and
    fields surrounding it.
  • Built around the acropolis, or fort on a hill
    that defended the city-state.
  • Each city-state had its own traditions and its
    own form of government.

ARISTOCRACY
  • Earliest Rulers were chieftains or kings who were
    military leaders.
  • Kings were overthrown by the nobles, or
    aristocracy.
  • Members of the rich and powerful families who
    owned land.
  • Controlled almost every part of Greek life.
  • Government was called an oligarchy

  • Seized power by force by overthrowing the
    aristocratic government.
  • Supported by middle and working class.
  • Ended the aristocrats power and promoted trade.
  • Some were harsh rulers while others were fair and
    just.

  • Athens and many other city-states overthrew

  • They formed democracies within their city-states.
  • Democracy is a form of government in which
    citizens govern themselves.
  • Democracies benefited men who were 18 or older
    free citizens living in Athens.

  • Reformed laws in Athens and allowed Athens to
    become the leading democracy in the ancient world

    Athenian government

  • Helped Athens reach the height of glory
  • Introduced reforms that strengthened democracy in
    Athens
  • All citizens should vote and serve in the
    assembly
  • He contributed towards making Athens a beautiful
    city by hiring the best architects and sculptors
    to rebuild the city after one of the citys many
    wars.
