What is CINAHL?
  • Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health
    Literature.
  • Covers the following areas
  • Nursing, Cardiopulmonary Technology, Emergency
    Services, Health Education, Laboratory
    Technology, Medical Assistance, Medical Records,
    Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy.

What is CINAHL?
  • Indexes journal articles, healthcare books,
    nursing dissertations, selected conference
    proceedings, and standards of professional
    practice, educational software, and publications
    of the American Nurses Association the National
    League of Nursing.
  • Covers 1982-present 70 of the citations are
    also in MEDLINE.

  • You will find a link to CINAHL in the Quick Links
    on the Health Sciences Librarys home page at
    http//library.luhs.org

Planning a Search
  • Develop your question.
  • How do patients cope with leukemia?
  • Divide the question into important searchable
    concepts.
  • Concept 1 Leukemia
  • Concept 2 Coping
  • Search each concept separately, and then combine.
  • Do not search general terms like effect, results.

  • On the CINAHL Headings search screen, enter the
    first concept for your question.
  • CINAHL will map the term or phrase to the most
    appropriate subject heading.

  • Check the box in front of the most appropriate
    heading.
  • Check the Explode box, to search for the concept
    as well as narrower, more specific terms.
    Click Search.

  • Subheadings are used to further describe a
    particular aspect of a CINAHL subject heading.
  • Find Subheadings by clicking on the hyperlinked
    subject heading. Example click on the word
    Leukemia.
  • (Subheadings are seen on the next slide)

To narrow your search, you may select one or more
subheadings that relate directly to your
question. Click Search to search the term with
subheading(s). Caution The use of subheadings
is very restrictive, be careful in using them.

  • Check the Major Concept box if you want to
    retrieve articles where the search term is the
    major focus of the article. Citations retrieved
    will be more relevant and specific.

  • The search term is posted to the main screen. In
    this example, the search will retrieve articles
    about the diagnosis of leukemia.

  • To search your next concept, click on the Tab
    CINAHL Headings and repeat the steps in slides
    8-12.

  • Once all the concepts have been searched, combine
    the terms to focus your results.

    in front of the concepts you want to combine.
  • Click on ADD (2) to post to the main search box.
  • Then click on Search (3).

  • Age Groups

What is a Research Article?
  • Indicates an original (includes secondary
    analysis) complete research study containing data
    collection, methodology, discussion of results.
  • The limit to Research Articles is a feature
    unique to CINAHL.

What is a Special Interest Filter?
  • This limit includes several types of articles.
  • The Evidence based practice filter contains
  • Articles from special journals such as Evidence
    based medicine Evidence based nursing.
  • Articles selected in other journal titles that
    are relevant for that filter.
  • Research articles (including systematic reviews
    clinical trials), meta analysis, best practice
    articles, practice guidelines.
  • Articles about evidence based practice (theory,
    methodology etc.)

  • Scroll down to view results.

  • Click Add to save a citation to the Folder.
  • The folder will then show it has items.

  • Print E-mail Save Export

  • Export feature allows you to send your citations
    to a bibliographic manager such as Refworks.
  • For Information about using Refworks or other
    products to format bibliographies, contact a
    Research Services Librarian at 6-9192.

Full Text Electronic Articles
  • Some citations will have a link to electronic
    articles.
  • PDF full text articles with same pagination and
    format as the print version.
  • HTML full text article without pagination.
