Temporomandibular Joint Disease

• Definition
• A painful condition affecting the area where the
  lower jaw connects to the sides of the skull
  which impairs function and sensation in the face
  and jaw.

Commonly Recognized Causes

• Trauma to the head
• Blow to the head
• Not replacing missing teeth
• Old or ill fitting dentures
• Cradling a telephone between ear and shoulders
• Playing certain musical instruments

Major Symptoms

• Facial and jaw joint
• Popping, grating, and clicking sound with
  movement of jaw joint
• Swelling on side of face and mouth
• Deviation of jaw to one side
• Trouble swallowing

Treatments

• Two types
• Reversible
• Recommended

• Heat and ultrasound
• Massage and acupuncture treatments
• Non-surgical stabilization
• Fits snugly over the lower teeth and must be worn
  24 hours a day
