national relevance and international recognition,
for activities related to peaceful applications
of nuclear technology with due consideration to
safety.
ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY, SRI LANKA
5The Mission of the AEA
- Utilization of nuclear technology to its maximum
potential with reference to quality and quantity
in a cost effective manner, for socio-economic
development of the country. - Implementation of a regulatory programme

- T -Threats
ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY, SRI LANKA
7Strengths
- Well trained employees in various disciplines
- Availability of laboratory complex
- Self-reliance and sustainability.
- The introduction of commercial uses of nuclear
technologies, such as gamma irradiation for
industrial and agricultural products. - Many nuclear based technologies are now well
established in the AEA and there are clients
obtaining services from these technologies. - The Nuclear Analytical Techniques (NAT)
laboratory of the AEA obtained national
accreditation conforming to ISO/IEC 17025 in
2007. - Availability of instruments required for accurate
measurement of radiation doses for radiation
safety so that protection of workers and the
general public can optimized.
ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY, SRI LANKA
8Weaknesses
- Limited opportunities for research and
development in many areas of nuclear science due
to non-availability of resources for such works. - The available resources are not adequate to cope
with the planned programmes and demands for
services in radiation protection, non-destructive
testing (NDT), repair and maintenance of nuclear
instruments, environmental monitoring and
emergency preparedness. - Available equipments are now outdated or
malfunctioning - Inadequate publicity of services provided by AEA.
- Outdated Act
- Inability to compete with Private Sectors
ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY, SRI LANKA
9Opportunities
- Assistance and cooperation received from IAEA,
JICA,KOICA, RCARO, MEXT etc. - Availability of opportunities in development
programmes in other sectors where nuclear
technology could play a role. - Potential to increase the client base for the
services provided by AEA in existing technical
areas. - New opportunities arise due to multi disciplinary
nature of nuclear technology. - Budgetary allocation made by Government.
- Rules and regulations of Government. Eg.
Disseminations of regulations for food
preservation using ionizing radiation and for the
marketing of irradiated food.
ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY, SRI LANKA
10Threats
- Lack of opportunities for staff to obtain
postgraduate degrees in areas specific to their
work. - Inability to compensate staff for good
performance and increased income generation by
providing benefits and rewards. - Inability to provide immediate relief to staff
with regard to basic amenities such as transport,
housing and social security. - Confusing situation with regard to revision of
salaries and other emoluments for staff. - Fiscal measures adopted by the Government for
curtailment of expenditure, resulting in
inability to achieve the goals as planned. - Nuclear Technology is expensive and it needs to
compete with conventional methods in most areas.
