CETL - CIPeL
  • CETLs are a high profile, innovative national
    project that values the input of students in its
    activities.
  • CIPeL is a collaborative Centre for Excellence in
    Teaching and Learning (CETL) between Coventry and
    Sheffield Hallam Universities.
  • It is thought that e-learning may break the
    barriers associated with Inter-professional
    learning.

Aims of CIPeL
  • Develop and disseminate solutions to current
    barriers that hinder the advance and embedding of
    inter-professional learning (IPL) in health and
    social care education.
  • Act as a beacon of best practice and promote
    and disseminate inter-professional e-learning
    (IPeL) nationally and internationally
  • Stimulate, support and develop staffs
    inter-professional e-learning skills.
  • Through research and evaluation contribute
    significantly to the development of a pedagogic
    evidence base, which will inform future
    development in IPeL.
  • Provide a national and international
    inter-professional e-learning observatory and
    resource.

  • Approximately 900 students for each Academic year
    (3 years)
  • Types of students Medical, Nursing (Adult,
    Child, Mental Health, Learning Disabilities),
    Paramedics, ODPs, Midwives, Occupational
    Therapists, Physiotherapists, Social Care
    Dieticians
  • Frequency IPLP each year

Student Interns
  • The Centre for Inter-Professional e-Learning
    (CIPeL), at the Faculty of Health and Life
    Sciences invite student interns on a fixed term
    basis for 1 year.
  • The positions commenced in March 2007 and hours
    are flexible normally up to 10 hours per year
    as required and according to availability with
    respect to programme of study.
  • Student Interns will be required to provide
    electronic feedback on a variety of learning
    materials.
  • Recruitment Total 12 students, 3 students
    (CU),9 (SHU)
  • Student Interns are from a variety of
    professional backgrounds (Dietician
    (1),Physiotherapy (1),Social work (1),
    Radiotherapist (2), Nurse (1), Radiography
    (1)Occupational therapy (1), Information
    Technology (4))
  • Student Intern Support and co-ordination is
    provided by Elinor Clarke (Coventry) and Helen
    Bywater (Sheffield Hallam)

Student Voice or Voices in Higher Education?
  • Both the Oxford English Reference Dictionary
    the Chambers Dictionary define voice as the
    right to express an opinion in some form or
    other
  • Voting, General and local elections, not voting
    and voting with feet.
  • Student Union local national voice.
  • Student Reps link between students and staff.
  • Individuals - Evaluating Courses, modules,
    accommodation
  • Expressing opinions about all aspects of student
    life and experiences (Coventry University 2007)

Robert Voicing my experiences
  • Direct contact with CIPeL staff, including
    regular contact with associate director Elinor
    Clarke .
  • Access to CIPeL web community, comments on
    learning objects, discussion forums.
  • HEFCE study, took part in HEFCE independent
    research of CIPeLs activities.
  • Sweden Academic exchange, gave student
    perspective during discussion.
  • This presentation, student perspective on CIPeLs
    student interns, disseminating information.
  • Disseminating information, meeting people,
    handing out information etc.

Future Developments for CIPeL Interns
  • Good relationships, need to be maintained.
  • Establish regular meetings with fellow student
    interns, discuss CIPeLs work, review learning
    objects as a group.
  • Gain further insight into other students
    thoughts opinions and experience of IPL,
    formally, structured research, informally,
    talking.
  • Disseminate information, informing IPL students
    of CIPeLs work, produce leaflets, giving
    presentation, talking.
  • Disseminate information, trying to publish the
    essay that supports this presentation.
  • Create a learning object.

  • Summary and Conclusions
  • Students contribute to CIPeL core activities.
  • Students and secondees participate in CIPeL
    community web
  • Student Interns are rewarded for their
    contributions.
  • The Centre for Interprofessional e-learning
    values students
  • Voices in both design and development of Learning
    Objects.
