10
Suggest a song
  • That fits the criteria better than another song
    on the list
  • Write a paragraph or two explaining your choice

11
My suggestion How High the Moon
  • Huge hit for Capitol Records 1 in 1951 Les
    Paul and Mary Ford
  • Written by Nancy Hamilton/Morgan Lewis in 1941
    for a Broadway musical
  • Pauls version of How High the Moon is a perfect
example of his wizardry as an amazing guitarist,
    a ground-breaking sound engineer, and a skilled
arranger. His song meets the criteria at almost
    every point.
  • The melody is a real brain-worm itll be with
you the whole day, and Pauls Django-Reinhardt
style is as dazzling as it is mesmerizing.

12
My suggestion How High the Moon
  • The lyrics certainly have that Tin-Pan
    Alley-Forties triteness but Fords over-dubbed
voice gives them a fresh, haunting quality and
they are a fine example of a post-war generation
    that really wanted to swing.
  • Somewhere there's music
  • How near, how far
  • Somewhere there's heaven
  • It's where you are
  • The darkest night would shine
  • If you would come to me soon
  • Until you will, how still my heart
  • How high the moon

13
My suggestion How High the Moon
  • Most important is that this song was at the
vanguard of a revolution in recording. It was
the first song to use over-dubbing and close
miking, all based on Pauls pioneering work in
multi-tracking it was well before its time.
  • It is thanks to Les Paul that we have solid body
    guitars, multi-track recording and Selective
    Synchronization
  • Some critics consider this the first Rock and
Roll songI think it certainly rocks.
