8
Modular System
  • Take a total of 12 modules each stage
  • 6 modules per semester
  • Each degree has a set of CORE modules that you
    must take
  • For the BSc you MUST take 5 Science modules per
    semester
  • You may take 1 free elective per semester (may be
    from Science)
  • Your choice of modules determines the degree(s)
    that you may take
  • Strongly advised to select modules to allow you
choose from at least 2 degrees after Stage 1

9
Mathematics
  • Two strands of Mathematics are offered
  • Advanced Strand (Math 10040, 10050, 10060)
  • General Strand (Math 10070, 10080, 10090)
  • All degrees in Science require students to take a
    minimum of 2 Maths modules
  • Mathematics Support Centre is a free service to
help with any Maths problems students may have

10
Choosing Modules
  • Science Modules
  • Firstly, focus on the degree(s) that are of
    interest
  • Then choose the CORE modules for those degrees
  • Finally choose electives
  • Seven First Year Subjects in Science
  • Subject Credit Block
  • Allows you choose all the modules for a subject
    in one step
  • Does not guarantee a place in some subjects
  • ALL Science students are allowed entry to the
    Science modules of their choice
  • No restriction on the number of places for
    Science students

11
Choosing Modules
  • Special Science Electives
  • COMP 10080 Information and Communications
    Technology
  • COMP 10090 Introduction to Project Management
  • BIOL 10070 Biology for the Modern World
  • PHYC 10050 Astronomy and Space Science
  • STAT 10010 Concepts in Data Collection
  • Can take ANY Science module as an elective
  • Non-Science Electives
  • Huge choice !
  • Languages are very popular
  • Academic Mentors
  • Every student is allocated a staff mentor
  • Special Advisory Session before start of First
    Semester
  • Advise on module choice
  • Career opportunities

Choosing Modules
14
Examples of Stage 1 Student Choices
  • John is interested in Chemistry (but did not take
it at LC) and Biology. He chooses
  • CHEM 10010, 10050, 10060
  • BIOL 10020, 10050, 10060
  • MATH 10070, 10090
  • PHYC 10020
  • 1 other Science Module
  • 2 electives
  • John may take a degree in any of Chemistry,
    Biochemistry, Botany, Zoology, Pharmacology .
  • In Stage 2, John may still study any 3 of these
subjects before specialising in Stage 3.

15
Example 2
  • Ann is interested in Experimental Physics,
Mathematical Physics and Computer Science and
    chooses
  • PHYC 10060, 10070, 10080
  • MAPH 10010, 10020, 10030
  • MATH 10070, 10080, 10090
  • COMP 10010, 10020, 10040
  • Ann has chosen 2 Computer Science modules as her
electives to broaden her choice of BSc degree
  • Ann may take a degree in any of Experimental
    Physics, Mathematical Physics, Computer Science
or Mathematics - she can continue with any 3 of
these in Stage 2 and finally specialise in Stage
    3

16
Assessment
  • In general
  • Exams at end of each semester
  • 6 at Christmas
  • 6 in Summer
  • All modules will have some components of
continuous assessment during the semester - up to
    50
  • Attend ALL practicals Tutorials

17
Science Student Support
  • Three fulltime support staff for Science Students
  • 2 Student Advisers
  • 1 Chaplain
  • Science Programme Office Staff
  • BSc Coordinator
  • Academic Mentor
  • New for 2007 Peer Mentors
