7General Facts About the Fulbright Scholar Program
- Established in 1946
- Sends U.S. academics and professionals overseas
- Brings scholars and professionals from abroad to
the U.S. - Sponsored by U.S. Department of States Bureau of
Educational and Cultural Affairs - Administered by the Council for International
Exchange of Scholars (CIES)
8What is the Traditional Fulbright Program?
- The original core of the Fulbright program
- Over 800 awards each year for U.S. applicants
- Lecturing, Research, Lecturing and Research
combinations - Lengths vary from 3 to 12 months
- Types vary discipline specific awards and All
Discipline awards - Awards based on requests from host country and
institutions in each country
9Eligibility Requirements
- U.S. citizenship
- A Ph.D. or equivalent professional/terminal
degree in your field - For professionals and artists outside academia,
recognized professional standing and substantial
accomplishments - Teaching experience as required by award
- Limits apply to prior Fulbright Scholar grantees

- Region includes most Arab countries and Israel
- Turkey is part of Europe region
- No awards in Iraq, Iran, Libya, Yemen
- Approximately 55 awards annually
- The West Bank is included as a separate program
though not an independent country

- Variety of types of programs
- All programs have the All Discipline award
option - Most offer research awards or lecturing/research
awards, in addition to lecturing - Wide variety of number of awards, from 1-2 to 10
or more - Diversity of interest with respect to fields or
disciplines - Performing visual arts awards in several
programs - Science and engineering awards in all programs
- Award duration varies by program or activity
- Teach in English in most fields, some French
needed in North Africa Arabic needed for some
research - Some prior experience sometimes desirable, though
not required extensive prior experience can be a
disadvantage

American literature, business, economics,
environmental sciences/studies, political
science/international relations, EFL/ESL - Excellent in-country support by Fulbright
Commissions or U.S. Embassies - Competition varies across programs

- Asian studies awards at Tel Aviv University

- Israeli institutions are required to cost-share
in grant - A highly competitive award program

- Applicants should confirm affiliation abroad, if
possible - Record of research publication necessary
