Who should apply for a CESR
  • Anyone who can demonstrate same levels of skill
    and knowledge as CCT holders.
  • In effect
  • training outside UK, not prospectively approved
    by PMETB
  • some forms of movement between SAS and training
    post
  • EU graduate/national turned down by GMC

Where the decision is made
  • Royal College evaluation submitted to PMETB
  • PMETB makes decision
  • Rejected applicants given reason(s), periods of
    additional training needed and area(s), test(s)
    of knowledge and competence required plus how to
    seek review or make an appeal to the independent
    panel (Article 14)
  • 3 year time limit

What the decision should include
  • Distinguish between lack of documentary evidence
    (cant tell) or perceived gaps in training
  • Clear indication of competencies to be assessed
  • Details of top up training

Whats in the small print
  • Estimated to take 18 months to collate
    information
  • PMETB will almost always request more
    information/clarification
  • Clock starts only on letter of confirmation
  • Shortage of Royal College Evaluators
  • Send certified copies and translations of
    originals- everything kept 12mths, if you request
    return application ceases!

  • Validated documentary evidence
  • Breadth and depth of experience equivalent to CCT
    standards for the relevant specialty or for
    appointment as a consultant in the NHS

    to show coverage of the UK syllabus, numbers,
    supervision etc.

  • Brief referees fully eg. significance of
    negatives
  • Current and recent show what they are doing now

Exams Knowledge Tests
  • Applicants must provide evidence of up to date
    and clinically relevant factual knowledge. The
    evidence required will normally include
    successful completion of a test of knowledge
  • FRCS is a source of dispute

    deadline

  • Resubmit application within 3 years
  • Request an appeal through the Office of the
    Director of Appeals (3 month deadline)
