Did you know that.
  • In BC, at any given time, an estimated 15 of
    children (over 150,000) experience mental
    disorders that cause significant symptoms and
    impair functioning.
  • Only 1, or around 11,000 children and youth,
    were connected to the mental health system in BC
    in 2002.
  • This means over 139,000 children and youth in BC
    were left untreated.

Did you know..
  • Prevalence rates of Eating Disorders (from
    www.heretohelp.bc.ca)
  • Approximately 1 of young women have anorexia
  • Approximately 4 of young women have bulimia
  • Approximately 2 of people have problems
    controlling binge eating
  • 10 of people with eating disorders are male
  • 72 of young women with alcoholism also have an
    eating disorder
  • Eating Disorders are now the 3rd most common
    chronic illness in adolescent girls

  • Provincial snapshot of disordered eating among
    youth
  • (from McCreary Centre Society, 2000)
  • The proportion of youth reporting problem weight
    control practices was over one in five (22) for
    girls, and close to one in six (15) for boys
  • Problem weight control practices were reported
    among all ethnic groups analyzed British (22 of
    girls, 14 of boys) Chinese (21 of girls, 17
    of boys) East Indian (25 of girls, 23of boys)
    and Aboriginal (22 of girls, 17 of boys).

Our Mandate
  • Helping BC children, youth (under 24) and their
    families find resources to understand and deal
    with mental health and substance use issues
  • Providing timely, relevant, evidence-based and
    user friendly resources/ information to improve
    understanding of MHA issues among children,
    youth and their families
  • Providing information and support to adults with
    eating disorders
  • Integral part of the Health Literacy Strategy

Staffing and Resources
  • Team Composition
  • 1 Director, 1 Manager, 1 part time Peer Support
    Worker
  • Master level students from UBC and Adler School
    of Counselling and volunteers
  • The centre is set up with 3 computer stations, a
    separate Annex Room to review audio visual
    materials and over 30 resource binders for client
    access
  • Advisory Committee is set up to provide expertise
    advice to the Centres development starting
    September 2008

  • a. Help navigate the mental health and addictions
    system
  • b. Find information about child and youth mental
    health and substance use issues
  • c. Get help from a professional or a peer with
    understanding the information
  • d. Explore the range of options for support and
    treatment in BC
  • e. Learn about strategies to support the child or
    youth
  • f. Get ideas about prevention and self help

Did you know that youth say . . .
  • Things they have the most trouble dealing with
  • Parents, Coping, Stress, Drugs Alcohol, Peers
    Money.
  • The most common thing they do to cope with stress
    is-
  • to distract themselves with things like TV,
    games, and reading.
  • Being youth friendly means - easy to talk to
    and comforting.
  • The most important traits that make someone
    youth friendly are honesty, being an active
    listener, and being understanding.(Based on
    data from teen focus groups, Youth Net/Réseau Ado

How we can help
  • One to one in person or telephone consultation
  • Email exchange or mail out package of requested
    info to service users
  • Peer support for parents and family members
  • Tailored resources to parents, service providers,
    teachers, counsellors including listings of
    websites, brochures, books, DVDs
  • Collect updated fact sheets, toolkits, printed
    and online materials
  • Guidance and support to access appropriate
    services including support groups, treatment
    programs, etc.
  • Set up information booth upon request with tailor
    made resources for conferences, public events

Mental Health and Addiction Resource Collection
  • An inventory of resources developed with listing
    of over 30 subject areas on mental health and
    substance use issues
  • 30 resource binders are available for clients
  • Inventory on mental health and substance use
    treatment resources available for BC children and
    youth
  • DVDs and videos are available for clients to view
    onsite
  • Quick reference sheet with recommended websites,
    booklist for popular subject area e.g. anxiety,
    ADHD, Eating Disorders, Depression etc
  • Section on Family Education Events and Community
    Events are updated regularly on the Kelty website
