MCGILL UNIVERSITY, FACULTY OF DENTISTRY MOBILE
COMMUNITY CLINICS- THE MCGILL OUTREACH
PROGRAM The McGill Outreach Program uses the
McGill Faculty of Dentistry knowledge base and
their manpower to help promote the oral health of
disadvantaged people in the community.
MISSION To provide free basic diagnostic,
preventive, periodontal, restorative and surgical
therapy in order to meet some of the basic needs
of those vulnerable individuals in need of dental
care but whose access is limited due to
financial, psychological and/or physical reasons.
The McGill Outreach Program eliminates the
financial barriers by providing free basic dental
care and reduces psychological stressors by
setting up mobile dental clinics in community
centers that are familiar sites for the low
income, elderly, handicapped, and immigrant
groups of the population.
  • WHO WE ARE
  • McGill Faculty of Dentistry students with
dentists who volunteer their time and expertise.
  • 3rd and 4th year students on rotation who provide
clinical treatment assisted by 1st and 2nd year
    students.
  • A nine member management committee composed of a
    chairperson, coordinator, four community
leaders plus three McGill staff members who
    oversee the program.
  • Pre-dent students and prospective dental students
aided by the Cote St Luc Emergency Medical
    Service who supply additional support.
  • WHO WE HELP
  • Over 750 clients aged between 3 to 100 years for
    the past 5years.
  • Underprivileged groups including those who have
low or no income, and are homeless, elderly,
physically and/or emotionally disabled and recent
    immigrants.
  • Clients who are referred to the program by a
health care worker or a community agency leader
who identifies those who are in greatest need and
who would not otherwise be able to seek oral heal
    care.
  • WHAT WE DO
  • Using mobile dental units at various community
sites dental students are able to do
  • medical history,
  • dental and soft tissue exam,
  • cancer check,
  • preliminary diagnosis,
  • oral hygiene,
  • debridement and polishing,
  • topical fluoride treatments,
  • pit and fissure sealants,
  • Class I and II restorations, and
  • minor adjustments to removable prostheses
  • At the Montreal General Undergraduate clinic
    students can also
  • take radiographs,
  • make definitive diagnoses,
  • do extractions
  • WHY WE DO THIS
  • Research surveys consistently find higher rates
of caries and periodontal disease among those
    groups who
  • earn less than 30,000 a year or are unemployed,
  • have less than secondary education,
  • are homeless, elderly, disabled,
  • are recent immigrants to Quebec 1
  • The most often cited reasons for not seeking oral
health care among these groups include
  • low income
  • no dental insurance
  • no time for appointments
  • fear of pain and/or dentists
  • language barriers
  • low levels of education.
  • geographic limitations 1
  • There currently exist five recent initiatives in
Quebec that are attempting to address this
    problem
  • the McGill Outreach Program
  • the McGill Summer Program
