Common Conditions of the Ankle
  • Ankle arthritis occurs when the tibiotalar joint
has damaged or worn cartilage causing pain and
swelling of the talus, tibia, or fibula.
  • Ankle arthritis most likely involved in
    inflammatory arthritis occurring after injury.

Ankle Sprain
  • Injury to ligament in ankle when stretched or
    torn
  • Most common orthopedic injuries
  • Occurs when person lands from jumping or running
    on to an uneven surface.
  • Grade I Ankle Sprain
  • Stretched ligament, pain and swelling, difficulty
    jogging or jumping
  • Grade II Ankle Sprain
  • Partial tear of ligament, moderate pain, can take
    a few steps
  • Grade III Ankle Sprain
  • Complete tear of ligaments, severe painful,
    difficulty walking

is more common than the eversion sprain.
12
Ankle Fractures
  • Ankle fracture occurs in either the tibia,
    fibula, or the talus.
  • Most commonly occurs in the tibia or fibula.
  • Often includes total tear of one or more ankle
    ligaments
  • Symptoms pain to touch, swelling, bruising,
    inability to walk

13
Ankle Fracture
14
Achilles Tendonitis
  • Irritation and inflammation of Achilles tendon in
    posterior of ankle
  • It is an overuse injury that occurs in
    middle-aged athletes
  • Caused by lack of flexibility or overpronation
  • Symptoms pain and swelling over posterior of
    heel
  • Can lead to small tears within the tendon
