21NeoReviews Plus Self Assessment
- From Jay Shenai and John Hartline
- We address the Content Specifications proposed by
the American Board of Pediatrics, and it is our
intention to cover all of them (about 800) in a
3-year cycle.
22NeoReviews Plus Self Assessment
- There are 1156 individual content specifications
for NPM from the Sub-Board! - We anticipate covering those that can be covered
by this format over a 3 ½ year period or two
cycles per ABP maintenance of certification
interval of 7 years.
23NeoReviews Plus Self Assessment
- There are 8 writers, who write about 18
Questions/Critiques (Q/C) each year. - Each Q/C addresses at the least a part of 1
Content Specification or at the most up to 8
whole Content Specifications.
24NeoReviews Plus Self Assessment
- Each Q/C contains a vignette, a set of 5 answers,
and an indication of the Preferred Response. - All of the question writers have gone through
training regarding the art of composing questions
with the focus on testing knowledge and with no
trickery.
25NeoReviews Plus Self Assessment
- Each critique generally has
- An introductory paragraph that addresses
important concepts related to the subject, - Followed by a paragraph addressing the correct
answer, - Followed by one or more paragraphs addressing
each of the 4 incorrect answers. - The idea is to teach various aspects of the
subject.
26NeoReviews Plus Self Assessment
- Each Q/C is not just a clinical exercise, but is
designed to focus on pathophysiology and other
basic aspects needed to improve ones
understanding of the disease, its manifestations,
or its treatments. - Thus, each Q/C is expected to provide a high
order of complexity suitable for neonatologists
preparing for certification or re-certification.
27NeoReviews Plus Self Assessment
- Each Q/C is embellished with informative
illustrations - schematic diagrams (like those in
NEJM), actual clinical pictures, and some with
meaningful motion (not glitzy as one would see on
ESPN). - We plan to improve the illustrative aspect of our
endeavor to make full use of the electronic
medium.
28NeoReviews Plus Self Assessment
- Each Q/C is thoroughly reviewed at each of the 4
editorial board meetings per year for its
scientific content and the appropriate use of the
English language.
29NeoReviews Plus Self Assessment
- Each month we publish 10 Q/Cs (a lot of work!).
- We are surveying the recipients to determine the
optimal length of each Q/C. At present each Q/C
is 500-1000 words long and is like a thoroughly
reviewed manuscript. - Perhaps, the attention span or the time
commitment of the reader of the electronic medium
is not enough to warrant such lengthy
publications. - We will revise regularly to fit the optimal
presentation for the reader.
30NeoReviews Plus Self Assessment
- Each Q/C should be highly educational for the
reader, and in its preparation, a source of
learning as well as excitement and satisfaction
for the writer. - We believe that we have an excellent product for
education, which should receive a wide membership
throughout the United States and perhaps
internationally.
