2If your battery is almost dead and you have no
idea of where to buy a car battery, what will you
do? Aha! Heres where your skills of
jump-starting the battery will come in handy.
Though its never a sure shot way of starting
your car but its always worth the try. Whether
your car has a regular or a maintenance free
battery, the jump-start process can always give
you some buffer time to get a new battery.
3 Lets cover the process of how to safely
jump-start a battery 1. First of all make sure
the problem is with the battery. a. Are the
car headlights dim? Dim headlights indicate a
dead battery. If they are bright, its
probably another issue. b. Check accessories
and dashboard lights. In most cases, the
dashboard lights and accessories flicker even
with a low battery. If they dont, you may
have a problem with the ignition switch. c.
Does your car click slowly when you try to start?
If it clicks slowly or not at all, its a dead
battery. 2. Locate your car battery. a.
Mostly the battery is fitted under the cars
front hood. But in some cases it may also be in
the trunk or under a passengers seat of the
car.b. Identify the Positive (POS, RED, ) and
the Negative terminal (NEG, BLACK, -). c.
Also, inspect your car battery for cracks, leaks
or damages.
43. If battery terminals are corroded, clean the
cable and terminals before jump-starting. a.
Use a wire brush and mixture of baking soda and
water to clean the terminals. b. Make sure to
reconnect the terminals properly before
jump-starting the car. 4. Get a charged
battery. a. Get a working car or battery for
jump-starting. b. Turn off all the
accessories of the working car.
55. Get a jumper cable. a. Make sure that the
jumper cables are untangled. b. The red and
the black ends of jumper cables should never
touch each other. 6. Connect the jumper cables in
the following order a. Connect one red
clamp to the Positive () terminal of the dead
battery and other red clamp to Positive ()
terminal of charged battery. b.
Connect one black clamp to the Negative (-)
terminal of the charged battery and other black
clamp to a piece of grounded metal.
c. Use an unpainted surface or a spot on the
engine block without moving mechanical parts that
the cable could interfere with. This
will act as a ground and decrease the risk of
accidents. 7. Start the working car and let it
idle for a few minutes. Press the accelerator to
just a little above idle for 30 to 60 seconds.
This charges the dead battery. 8. Then try to
start the dead car. If it doesnt start, remove
the last connection, restart the working car and
allow 5 minutes of charging before trying to
start the other car again.
6 9. Once the car starts, remove the jumper
cables. Remove the cables in reverse order in
which they were attached. Dont let the clamps
touch each other. Also replace any battery covers
if necessary. 10. Keep your foot on the gas, and
press the accelerator to above idle for 5 minutes
to 20 minutes before turning it off. These tips
will definitely breathe some life into the dead
battery. Still, if your battery doesnt hold the
charge, you may need to visit a professional
