Skype, Facetime, Hangout What Should You Use?
2
  • You may have noticed that there are numerous
options when it comes to video conferencing. And
although there is no perfectvideo platform, there
are pros and cons to Skype, Facetime, and
Hangoutit just depends on what exactly you are
looking for. Below, well review several benefits
of each platform to help you decide which
software is best for you and your objectives.

3
Skype
  • For decades, Microsofts Skype has been the most
popular video conferencing appso much that its
name has morphed into a verb (i.e. Can you Skype
    tomorrow?).

4
  • Skype places a strong emphasis on
    user-friendliness and is accessible for
individuals that are new to video conferencing.
The software is available on most devices and
    offers cross-functional capabilities, also making
it a great option for participants with
    questionable or restricted network connections.
And because of its household name, its likely
that the people you are calling have usedor are
    at least familiar withthe software.

  • While Skype is free for one-on-one conferences,
it does require at least one user to have a Skype
    Premium subscription if additional participants
will be involved. Another downside is that the
software is notorious for quality issues,
especially if users are using mobile devices.

7
  • Bottom line Skype has established itself as the
most popular video conferencing software for good
reason. One-on-one video conferencing is simple
and user-friendly and its cross-platform options
are virtually unlimited. However, for multi-user
business calls, Skype can be limiting, and
overall connection issues can be frustrating.

8
FaceTime
  • FaceTime is Apples solution to video
conferencing. And like many of the companys
products, the platform is exclusively for Apple
users. However, if Apple is your brand of
    choiceand you prefer no-nonsense video
    conferencingthen it is worth considering
FaceTime for your video conferencing needs.

9
  • Simplicity is key with FaceTime. Unlike other
platforms that require you to deal with
friendship confirmations or buddy lists, FaceTime
literally allows video conferencing at the touch
of a button. Users are able to select the
FaceTime option directly from their iPhones or
Macs. And while the quality is exceptionally high
when users are connected via Wi-Fi, FaceTime is
    sometimes unreliable over mobile connections.

10
  • Bottom line FaceTime is a great solution for
Apple users who have access to a reliable Wi-Fi
connection. But due to the lack of cross-platform
capabilities, and its unreliability when it comes
to mobility, the software can be limiting.

Hangouts
  • Over the past several years, Google Hangouts has
established itself as an accessible video chat
service for small- and medium-sized businesses.
The service is completely free and offers
cross-platform functionality, as long as users
have a free Google account. But because the
social network has over 2.5 billion users, this
    is hardly a caveat.

13
  • Unlike Skype, Hangouts offers free video chat
capabilities for up to ten users at a time.
    Additionally, the platform supports
    screen-sharing and collaboration in conjunction
with Google Drivean attractive feature for
business use. The Live on Air feature also
allows users to live stream and save their chat
on Google or YouTube, making it valuable for
businesses to broadcast or save important
    information.

14
  • Bottom line If your participants have a Google
accountwhich they probably dothe platform is
easy to use. With attractive business features
    and cross-platform functionality, Hangouts has
emerged as a viable option for video conferencing.
