13
Issues and Perspectives Profession and Practice
  • Legislative Action
  • Force which has guided the focus of
    rehabilitation counseling (state-federal)
  • However, the profession has sought its own place
in business and society (private sector)

14
Cultural Pluralism
  • The largest single minority group in the U.S. is
    Americans with disabilities (49 million
    Americans)
  • Issues of discrimination prevail, and are
magnified by situations involving persons with
    disabilities

15
Dr. Daniel Sinick
  • Former ARCA President
  • 1981 interview which forecasted much of what has
    evolved in rehabilitation counseling today
  • Salvatore Di Michael
  • First ARCA President
  • not only professional enthusiasts but even
    secular missionaries.
  • Thoughts?

16
Whats your plan...
  • Individual rehabilitation counselors will need
    to take seriously their professional
    responsibility to continuously upgrade their
    skills. (Szymanski, 1985)
  • ...professional association membership and
    participation as a professional responsibility.

17
Future of Rehabilitation Counseling
  • Profession
  • Education
  • Research
  • Practice

18
Profession
  • Profession vs. Specialty Area in
    Counseling/Rehabilitation
  • pp. 262-263
  • In 1991 Thomas listed options for
    rehabilitation counseling
  • What option appears best to you?

19
Education
  • Szymanski, et al. study (1992)
  • Masters in RC worked more successfully with
persons with severe disabilities than did persons
with bachelors or unrelated Masters degrees
  • Work experience did not adequately substitute for
    education

20
Research
  • Journals You Should Know
  • Rehabilitation Education
  • Rehabilitation Counseling Bulletin
  • Journal of Applied Rehabilitation Counseling
  • Journal of Counseling and Development
  • Journal of Rehabilitation
  • Rehabilitation Psychology
  • MANY other related journals

21
Why Research?
  • To maintain current standards in
  • Accreditation
  • Certification
  • Licensing
  • Best Practices
  • In an era of increased public scrutiny, a strong
research program is vital for professional
    credibility. (Leahy Szymanski, 1995).

22
Practice
  • State-federal System of VR
  • Non-profit Rehabilitation Facilities
  • State-federal
  • Hospitals
  • Institutions
  • Organizations
  • Agencies

23
cont.
  • School-based transition programs
  • University services for students with
    disabilities
  • Disability Management Programs within employer
    settings
  • Marriage and Family Counseling
  • Clinical Mental Health
  • Group Private Practice
  • Pastoral Counseling

24
cont.
  • Substance Abuse Counseling
  • Private for Profit Rehabilitation Counseling
  • Mandatory provision of workers compensation
  • Insurance-based disability systems
  • Overflow from overtaxed state-federal systems

25
Table 17.2
  • Provides you with Rehabilitation Content Settings
  • You may wish to review this list as you are
exploring different job possibilities, and use it
as a cue to what to include in your cover letter
(e.g., your familiarity with current practices,
your interest in a specific aspect of that
    setting)

26
Administration
  • Citations in this section are dated (1982)
  • What do you think about the logic here
  • Fast promotion with poor preparation leads to
    burnout
  • Used data from the 10 that left their positions
(what is the average turnover of other
positions?) Is this data useful given their
departure? What do employees with tenure say?

27
I propose...
  • Many fields have promotion within an organization
that is based upon successful performance of a
job, which qualifies one to share that expertise
    with colleagues under your supervision
  • Many of the micro and macro management skills are
part of the on-going educational process, for
    which all should be accountable.
  • Student for Life!
