Project P.L.A.Y. Purpose
  • The specific objectives of Project P.L.A.Y. are
    as follows
  • to increase overall physical, leisure, and social
    capabilities in each participant
  • to enhance levels of physical fitness in each
    participant, including muscular strength and
    endurance, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility,
    agility, and coordination
  • to develop leisure time competencies in each
    participant that will enable initiation of
    additional activities independent of the program,
    as well as maintenance of achieved levels of
    motor proficiency and physical fitness for
    lifetime participation
  • to enhance self-concept and promote confidence in
    the physical and leisure capabilities of each
    participant
  • to serve as a resource to parents for the
    provision of social, physical fitness, and
    leisure opportunities for their children, and to
    provide training for parents to facilitate
    follow-up in the home
  • to develop a network of resources for each
    participant which will enable life-long
    participation in appropriate physical fitness,
    leisure, and social activities
  • to promote provision of opportunities in the
    least restrictive environment by offering
    appropriate extracurricular activities.

    having this program (parent of a 7 year-old male
    with visual impairment)

    participated to date
  • Some participants are in their 12th year of the
    program

    (Sara and Brie college students working with
    Krissy) are the best! (16 year-old female with
    Cerebral Palsy)

How Project P.L.A.Y. Works
  • Parent referral, WARM Line, Alta California
    Regional Center referral, on-line visit
  • Parent assessment on first night of program
    consult with college volunteer
  • Goals/Objectives see Purpose slide
  • Participation 3 to 25 year-olds with
    disabilities
  • Periodic Review Program assessment is conducted
    by project director annually. This includes
    participant, parent, and volunteer evaluations

  • My son cries every time the program is over I
    cant thank you enough for how much this program
    has helped his social skills (mother of 8
    year-old boy with Autism)

  • PLAY group makes me happy (facilitated
    communication output from a 18 year-old female
    with severe dyspraxia and non-verbal language)
  • I come back every year to work in the program
    I sometimes think that I get more out of the
    program than the participants do (22 year-old
    Sac State senior who has volunteered in the
    program for 4 semesters)
