Title: Evolution of the Electric Guitar 1931-1952
1Evolution of the Electric Guitar 1931-1952
21931Rickenbacker "Frying pan"
The frying pan was the first electric lap steel
guitar ever produced, and arguably the very first
electric guitar.
George Beauchamp, the general manager of the
National Guitar Corporation created the
instrument in 1931.
3 41935 Rickenbacker "Electro String"
Despite the popularity of arch tops, the 1935
Bakelite Model B Spanish guitar made the most
history for Rickenbacker.
Electro String was the original company that
created the guitar and Bakelite is an early form
of plastic used to make records, billiard balls,
and telephone receivers in the early 1900s.
5 61941 Les Paul "Log"
Paul's innovative guitar, "The Log", built
after-hours in the Epiphone guitar factory in
1940, a 4? x 4? block of solid maple wood with
the string.
71947 Bigsby-Travis Guitar
Paul Bigsby, a mechanic from Los Angeles, teamed
up with country singer and guitarist Merle travis
to design a solid body electric guitar that was
more like what we know today as electric guitar.
The seeds of Bigsbys subsequent career with his
signature vibrato design were most likely planted
the day Travis asked him if he could fix a
Kaufman vibrato unit.
8 91952 Gibson Les Paul
The Les Paul model was the result of a design
collaboration between Gibson Guitar Corporation
and the late pop star, electronics inventor, and
accomplished jazz guitarist Les Paul.
In 1950, with the introduction of the Fender
Telecaster to the musical market, electric
guitars became a public craze. In reaction,
Gibson Guitar president Ted McCarty brought
guitarist Les Paul into the company as a
consultant.
