Title: Lifting the Smoking Ban Philadelphia

1
Lifting the Smoking Ban -Philadelphia
  • Bars are for Drinking and Smoking!

Smoking
2
The Smoking Ban And What It Will Mean
  • Originally, the proposed smoking ban would
prohibit smoking in all public places including
restaurants, bars, coffee houses, hookah bars,
    and cigar bars
  • As of May 26th, 2005 amendments to the bill
    include exempting sidewalk cafes, offering
private clubs (tobacco stores) a waiver and
giving bars an additional two years to become
    smoke-free (Philly OKs revisions)
  • If the revised legislation is passed and signed
into law, the ban will take effect in January of
    the upcoming year.
  • Bars, defined as establishments where food sales
account for no more than 10 percent of receipts ,
would have until 2008 to become smoke-free
    (Philly OKs revisions)

So Whats With The Cloud of Smoke?
  • Health Reasons
  • For patrons of establishments
  • As well as for those working in the hospitality
    industry
  • Economical Reasons
  • Based on the latest survey taken by LibertyPoll,
    of 1,000 residents in the tri-county, 10-county
region shows that 31 percent would be much more
likely to go to the Citys bars and restaurants
if they were required by law to be smoke free
    (Philadelphia Smoking Ban)

4
The Poll(According to LibertyPoll)
  • 31 percent said they would be much more likely to
go to Philadelphias bar and restaurants if
    smoking were prohibited
  • 9 percent said they would be somewhat more
    likely
  • 6 percent said they would be much less likely
  • 8 percent said they would be somewhat less
    likely
  • 45 percent said a ban would not change their
    current behavior
  • 1 percent did not have a response or declined to
    respond
  • People from New Castle County, Delaware, where a
smoking ban is in effect, would be significantly
more likely to go to a Philadelphia bar or
restaurant if a smoking ban were enacted
  • Among 18-24 year-olds, 40 percent say they are
much more likely to go to smoke-free bars and
    restaurants
  • Women would be significantly more likely to go to
a Philadelphia bar or restaurant if a smoking ban
    were enacted

What The Poll Doesnt Tell You
  • The percentage of smokers who will choose not to
patron bars as a result of the ban.
  • The primary argument for smokers is that instead
of going to the local bar, they would most likely
go straight home after a long hard day of work
according to the article, Haze of opinion hangs
over the plan to ban smoking (Sweeney)
  • The number of bars that will open up in other
counties without the ban, instead of in
    Philadelphia
  • If the ban passes, Dennis and John OConnor,
owners of two Kellianns bars will open it in
    Chester County, instead (Sweeney)

7
But its too cold to smoke outside!
  • Most restaurants generally have smoking and
    non-smoking sections, or a total non-smoking
    policy
  • As someone who has worked as a waitress, I can
tell you that theres a huge difference between
the amount of smoke found in a bar and in a
    restaurants smoking section. Generally, people
do not sit down for a meal and chain-smoke
    (Rockar)
  • Its hypocritical to ban smoking at places where
drinking is still legal. The two go hand in
hand. Theyre both bad for you, according to
bartender Brenna McGinnis, a 23 year old smoker
    (Sweeney)

Baby, we would go great together!

What The Lawmakers Ought To Do
  • Meet half way ban smoking in restaurants allow
smoking in bars. After all, we eat at
restaurants because of the food and the
atmosphere. We pay visits to bars in order to
release the stress we bear and our daily
    inhibitions.
