• New FHS approved by senate and BOG November, 2003

• Data warehouse central to FHS mandate and plan
• Associate Dean, research, to be responsible for
  warehouse and new IHR
• Various data sources envisioned for warehouse
  vital stats, arthritis, health authority, textual
  and visual sources

• Increase capacity for health research
• Vehicle for developing infrastructure
• Branding of new faculty
• Student training

• Spatial statistics and GIS

• Computing science security, interfaces, data
  mining
• Public health/social epidemiology
• Virology/immunology

Time Line VSA

• Sept. 02 became a BETA test site for VISTA
• Feb. 03 preliminary discussions for access to
  low levels of data aggregations to support
  research project
• Investigated the feasibility of a data warehouse
  to support FHS research goals
• June 03 formal talks and signed a LOI with VSA
• July 03 technical inventory/assessment to
  support a data warehouse
• Feb. 04 completed a Licensing Agreement with
  the Province
• Working on MOU and technical infrastructure

Preliminary Access Framework

• Ultra Secure this level is used by
  administrators of the system Level IV
• High Privileged Researcher this role can read
  some Aggregates, all metadata and can
  define/change some OLAP metadata for
  generation/documentation. This role can read all
  data in the Data Publishing system Level III
• Named Researcher this is a uniquely identified
  person who has read access to some aggregates and
  the metadata of SFU VISTA. This role can read all
  data in the Data Publishing system Level II
• Public Research The users with this role do not
  have to be uniquely identified for security
  reasons. User will have access to the VISTA
  system for read access to aggregate data Level I

Data Warehouse Proposed User Profile

• Typical users include researchers outside of the
  university campus, NGOs and undergraduate
  researchers (Level I)
• Graduate researchers (Level II and possibly Level
  III.)
• Doctorate and post doctorate research (Level II
  and III), and faculty (level I,II,III

Data Access Proposed Logical Flow

• Data Request
• Determination of the Level of Access
• Review Committee Yes/NO
• No custom query service or access via the secure
  lab
• Web interface access the user ID assigned for a
  specific time period. DAD signed between the
  researcher and SFU
• Lab environment types of access either direct
  access the data via the secure lab or data
  queries conduction by FHS data staff
