  • RAS/8/016
  • RADIATION PROCESSING APPLICATIONS FOR HEALTH
    AND THE ENVIRONMENT
  • Lead Country PHILIPPINES
  • Project Lead Country Coordinator L. V. Abad
  • 31st NRM, Tokyo, Japan, 21 24 April 2009

2
  • OBJECTIVES
  • - to apply radiation processing to natural
polymers for use in the health and the
    environment sectors
  • - to establish the appropriate radiation
    processing technology for environmental
    remediation
  • - to promote the utilization of the developed
    radiation processing technology to end-users

3
  • PARTICIPATING MEMBER STATES
  • Bangladesh Mongolia
  • China Myanmar
  • India Pakistan
  • Indonesia Philippines
  • Japan Sri Lanka
  • Korea Thailand
  • Malaysia Vietnam

4
  • ACCOMPLISHMENTS
  • Regional activities
  • - Mid-Term Review Meeting, Quezon City, the
    Philippines, 7-11 April 2008
  • - Regional Executive Management Seminar for
    Policy Makers and Entrepreneurs, Takasaki,
    Japan, 8-12 December 2008

5
  • ACCOMPLISHMENTS
  • National programs (13/14 participating MSs)
  • a) Health applications
  • - Different natural polymers available in
    the region (agar, carageenan, chitosan,
    polylactic acid, polysaccharide derivatives,
HA-chitosan) have been modified by radiation to
    synthesize new products (hydrogel wound
    dressing, materials for tissue engineering
    applications incl. bone substitute, hydrogel
for pain relief, drug delivery system,
    nanoparticles,). These products are at
different stages of development and technology
    transfer (R D, pre-clinical trials, clinical
trials, pilot scale, transfer to industry)

6
  • ACCOMPLISHMENTS
  • National Programs
  • a) Health applications
  • - modification of synthetic polymers
(polyurethane, PVA, etc.) for the synthesis
of new products at different stages of
    development
  • b) Environmental applications
  • - radiation-modified polymers for metal
    adsorption, soil conditioning
  • - radiation is effective in degrading
    organic pollutants ( POPs, 4-Cl-phenol)

7
  • ACCOMPLISHMENTS
  • 2. National Programs
  • b) Environmental applications
  • - integrated EB-ion exchange-biological
    treatment for recycling of industrial
wastewater of the textile and food
beverage industries with large reduction in
    COD and BOD values
  • - development of copolymer/composites by
    radiation for waste water treatment/
    enhanced oil recovery
  • - development of nanomaterials

8
  • ACCOMPLISHMENTS
  • 2. National programs
  • c) Radiation facilities development/upgrading
  • - construction of 350 kCi Co-60 irradiator
    in Bangladesh
  • - establishment of a multipurpose
    irradiation facility in Sri Lanka
  • - upgrading of multipurpose irradiation
    facility (semiautomated handling system
and loading of 150 kCi Co-60) in the
    Philippines
