- Four key data elements require standards
- A uniform premises identification system
- A uniform and nationally recognized individual
numbering system - A uniform and nationally recognized numbering
system for groups or lots of animals and - A uniform numbering system for non-producer
participants (such as tag distributors, animal
health officials, labs, etc).

- Production information would not be needed for
disease tracking purposes, but could enable
value-added data to flow up the production chain - Data may be used by producers for production
purposes and to gain marketing advantage

11Current Status and Initial Implementation Steps
- 18.8 million now transferred from USDAs
Commodity Credit Corporation to fund the
development and implementation of an animal
identification system. - Implementation to start on a voluntary basis, and
will move towards eventual requirements for
premises and animal identification as we learn
more during the development and implementation of
the system and as confidentiality of data issues
are addressed.

- Selections for initial round of cooperative
agreements announced by Secretary Veneman mid
August 2004. - 29 agreements approved for states and tribes for
a total of 11.6 million in funding.

16- May 20, 2003. U.S. border closed to all Canadian
cattle and beef - Aug. 8, 2003. U.S. border opened to boneless
muscle cuts from cattle less than 30 months of
age - Nov 2003. Aphis proposal to allow Canadian
cattle, and bone-in beef, under 30 months of age - Comment period ended Jan 5, 2004
17- BSE case in U.S. confirmed on Dec 23, 2003
- Mar 2004. Expanded proposal to allow beef from
cattle over 30 months if U.S. protocol for SRM
used - Why? Mexico will hold U.S. to protocol used with
Canada! - April 2004. R-CALF USA sues USDA and temporary
restraining order granted. - 2005 when will cattle and bone-in product be
allowed into the US?
