Which Is More Secure EMV or NFC?

When it comes to paying for goods or services,
unless you are using cash, the other popular
options are to use a credit or debit card with an
EMV chip or NFC and a virtual wallet on your
smart phone. With the different technologies
available to pay for goods and services, people
often wonder which payment method is the most
secure.

3
EMV Technology EMV technologies came about as a
means to make obtaining personal data off of
debit and credit cards more difficult by
encrypting the data and using two factor
authentications.

4
Two factor authentications is a security method
where you need to provide two separate pieces,
typically something you know and something you
have, in order to gain access to data.

5
For instance, the EMV chip in your card is
something you have and is the first part of the
authentication process. After the card is
inserted into the machine, it will ask you to
provide a PIN number, which is something you know
and is the second part of the authentication
process.

6
From a security perspective, EMV chip
technologies only help prevent fraud for
transactions where the card is present and
inserted into the actual machine. For online,
telephone, and other transactions where you
provide or enter the numbers on the card, they
are less secure and fraud could still occur.

NFC Technology NFC (Near Field Communication)
is a type of technology that was implemented
previously with little success, prior to EMV.
Consumers were not entirely sure using this
technology would be any more secure than swiping
their card.

8
The basic concept of the technology is a person
could simply tap their card on the credit/debit
card machine to have their payment
processed. Credit card issuers embedded a small
NFC transmitter with encrypted card data into
credit cards.

9
When placed within close proximity of the card
machine, the data is transmitted to the receiver
inside the machine and the transaction is
processed. Flash forward to today and the advance
in smart phone technologies, and NFC has been
reborn. It is the technology used for virtual
wallet apps, like Google Wallet, Apple Pay,
Android Pay, and so on.

With NFC smart phone payments, NFC incorporates
triple factor authentication, utilizing a variety
of methods including tokenization, biometrics,
and secure chips. Additionally, each of these
items are specific to each individual smartphone
and person.

For instance, if you wanted to use your iPhone
and Apple Pay, you would have to use Touch ID to
make a payment or unlock the phone, then access
the wallet. Once the wallet is configured on an
iPhone, Apply Pay transmits the Device Account
Number (DAN),

not the actual credit card number when a payment
is processed. The DAN is also unique on each
phone for each card stored within the wallet.
Furthermore, the NFC technology built into the
phone contains a secure chip for encrypting data
as it is transmitted.

13
In the end, NFC and virtual payments using your
smart phone are actually more secure than using
an EMV chip card. For businesses concerned about
the security of their data and IT
systems, Technical Action Group is here to help.
