2Rigid Bronchoscopy
- Rigid Bronchoscopy is a procedure used to examine
the tracheobronchial tree in order to remove
tissue, dilate areas of airway narrowing, or
insert prostheses (also known as stents) to treat
airway obstruction. - Procedures are performed in the operating room
under general anesthesia, and may involve the
additional use of flexible bronchoscopy and
lasers.
3Prior to the Procedure
- Prior to the procedure, you will have an
- appointment with your physician during which
- a physical examination will be performed and
- additional tests may be ordered as warranted.
- Some of these tests may be performed on the
- morning of your procedure.
4Pre Procedure Tests
Tests may include Electrocardiogram
(EKG) Pulmonary Function Tests Chest X-ray or CT
Scan Blood Tests

- with a detailed description of the procedure,
answer your questions, and - ask you to sign an informed consent form.
6Very Important!
- DONT EAT, DRINK OR SMOKE AFTER MIDNIGHT THE
NIGHT BEFORE YOUR PROCEDURE. - YOU SHOULD, HOWEVER, TAKE PRESCRIBED MEDICATIONS
WITH SIPS OF WATER. - PLEASE ARRIVE 2 HOUR PRIOR TO
- YOUR PROCEDURE START TIME
- BECAUSE OF THE ANESTHESIA, FOR YOUR SAFETY AND AS
REQUIRED BY LAW, YOU MUST HAVE A RESPONSIBLE,
CARING ADULT TO DRIVE YOU HOME. - YOU MAY ALSO HAVE TO SPEND THE NIGHT IN THE
HOSPITAL.

- Turn West toward the ocean
- and then left on Medical Center Drive

- Please report to the
- UCI Medical Center
- Main Lobby
- Discounted validated Valet parking is available.
- Bring your parking ticket to the receptionist for
validation.
9Before the Procedure
- Before the procedure, you will be asked to wear a
hospital gown. An intravenous catheter will be
inserted. - Inform the nurse of any allergies you may have,
and which medications you are taking. - Bring a list of your current medications with
dosages. -
10During the Procedure
- During the procedure, monitors will be placed to
measure your blood pressure, heart rate, and
oxygen saturation. - General anesthesia will be administered by the
anesthesiologist. - Procedures take 1-2 hours to complete.
11After the Procedure
- After the procedure, you will be cared for in the
recovery area for at least two hours - You will be wearing an oxygen mask
- Monitors will be on your arm and finger.
- You may need a chest
- x-ray or bronchodilator breathing treatment.
- You should not eat or drink anything for at least
two hours after the procedure. - You will then be transferred to the same day
surgery patient observation area or you could be
discharged home
12Discharge
- Discharge from the hospital or procedural area
will occur when you are stable and feeling well. - Again, for your safety and as required by state
law, you must have someone drive you home. - Results and recommendations from the procedure
will be mailed or faxed to you, your referring
and primary care physicians. - We will call you for a follow-up appointment if
further care is necessary.

- Increased or new blood in your sputum when you

- After normal office hours, call the hospital
operator at - (714) 456-6011 and ask to page the Pulmonary
Fellow on call.
