GRASS FIRESOKLAHOMA, TEXAS, AND NEW MEXICO

• As 2005 was ending and 2006 was beginning, major
  grass fires whipped by high winds roared across a
  drought-stricken region of Texas, Oklahoma, and
  New Mexico.
• Hundreds of people were evacuated.
• Loss of life was low, but economic loss was high.

GRASS FIRES TEXAS

• In Texas, 73 fires were still burning on January
  1, 2006 after charring 300,000 acres.
• The fires, which came within 200 km (125 miles)
  of Dallas, burned over 600,000 acres, destroyed
  hundreds of homes and buildings, and wiped out
  two small Texas towns, Ringgold and Kokomo.

GRASS FIRES OKLAHOMA

• Since Nov. 1, more than 25 Oklahoma wildfires
  have covered more than 285,000 acres and
  destroyed 200 buildings.

GRASS FIRES NEW MEXICO

• Four fires in the Hobbs, NM area, a town of
  29,000 people, blackened more than 65,000 acres
  of grassland and burned more than a dozen houses
  and barns.
• 170 elderly residents were moved out of two
  nursing homes on New Years Day, and a casino and
  community college were evacuated.
