2
Water Usage Facts
  • About 50 percent of all water consumption, during
the summer months, is through outdoor water
    usage.
  • Do not water the street, walks or driveways.
    Concrete Doesnt Grow.
  • Deep watering of your lawn, once a week, is more
beneficial to your lawn than frequent watering.
  • Watering during the heat of the day actually
    wastes water, due to evaporation.

3
Outdoor Conservation Tips
  • Water lawns early in the morning (before 8 a.m.)
or in the evening (between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.).
  • Use sprinklers that produce large water droplets
rather than fine mists. This avoids
    evaporation.
  • Turn soaker hoses so that the holes face down.
    This avoids evaporation.

4
Outdoor Conservation Tips
  • Water slowly for better absorption into the
    ground.
  • Never water on windy days.
  • Set your sprinklers to only water the vegetation
not the street, walks, or driveways. Then hand
water the edges of the lawn.

5
Outdoor Conservation Tips
  • Condition the soil with compost before planting
grass or flowerbeds. This allows the water to
soak in rather than run off.
  • Know when your grass needs watering. If it is
dull gray-green or it a footprint remains
visible, it is time to water.
  • Do not over water. Soil can only absorb so much
moisture, the rest simply runs off.

6
Outdoor Conservation Tips
  • 1 ½ inches of water, once per week, is generally
all that is needed to keep most Texas grasses
    alive and healthy.
  • Cut grass often, but only cut about ½ to ¾ inches
off. Longer grass retains moisture longer.
  • Plant flowers and shrubs that are rated and grow
    best in this area.

7
Outdoor Conservation Tips
  • Use a broom or rake to sweep sidewalks and
    drives.
  • Use a bucket and soapy water to wash your car.
And never let the hose run while you are soaping
the car down, use a cut off nozzle or simple cut
the water off until you need it.
