graders from low-income schools - NAU specified sites in its grant applications

14Who are Arizona Quest for Kids Students?
- Teacher-nominated 5th graders
- Bright students with high potential for success
in post-secondary education - Eligible for free and reduced lunch
- Free of behavioral problems
- Good attendance and low mobility
- Likely to be the first from their family to
participate in post-secondary education

MENTORING
ENRICHMENT

SCHOLARSHIP
16Mentoring
- Mentors meet with their student mentee a minimum
1 hour per week - Mentors must commit to stay involved for at least
1 year (but most stay much longer) - Mentors serve as a positive adult role model and
provide friendship, guidance and encouragement to
their mentee.
17Enrichment
- Offered to broaden the students life experiences
and involvement in the community - Better prepares youth for success by exposing
them to the world outside of their customary
surroundings - Enrichment opportunities include visits to
college campuses, museums, theatres, science
exhibits, and other cultural and educational
venues.
18Family Support
- Collaborative relationships are built early on
with participant families - On-going opportunities are provided for youth and
family asset building - AQFK has supported students and their families in
the following ways - Assistance in obtaining low-income loans
- Access to continuing education for parents and
older siblings - Career counseling
- Financial education
- Access to medical and legal services
19Scholarship
- Students who successfully complete the program,
will have earned a college scholarship equivalent
of up to four-years worth of tuition at an
Arizona university - Can be used as such, or can be used by the
student to attend a technical school, community
college, or an out-of-state university
20History
- David Highmark of Northern Trust Bank brought the
idea to Arizona after witnessing a similar
program in Naples, Florida - AQFK launched its pilot program at Madison Park
Elementary School in central Phoenix in January
2000- seven students were enrolled - Received Mayors Partnership Award for Youth
Development/Mentoring in 2001

- 232 students currently enrolled
- 440 students to be enrolled by May 2004
- Eleven partner schools from six school districts
- (Creighton, Kyrene, Madison, Murphy,
Paradise Valley, and Sunnyside) - Four community-based partners
- 100 Black Men

- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tucson
