What is File Formats?
  • A file format is a standard way that information
is encoded for storage in a
  • computer file.
  • A File extension sometimes called a file suffix
    of a filename extension.
  • Any file's extensions can be renamed but that
won't convert the file to another
  • format or change anything about the file
other than this portion of its name.
  • Many file extensions, especially those used by
    common image, audio, and video
  • formats, are usually compatible with more
than one program you have installed.

3
Why are different file types needed?
  • you know the correct software to use.
  • The user knows what the file may contain from the
    file extension.
  • Searching and sorting files can be done
    effectively.
  • The operating system can display appropriate
    icon.
  • It is easier to open the appropriate application.
  • Application programs know how to load up and
    interpret the data

  •  issuing the first JPEG standard in 1992.
  • also the most common format saved by digital
    cameras.
  • For web usage, where the amount of data used for

  • Png is also used of compression.

  • Raw files are named so because they are not yet
processed and therefore are not ready to
be printed or edited with a bitmap graphics
    editor.
  • Raw image files are sometimes called digital
negatives, as they fulfill the same role
    as negatives in film photography.

    by Truevision Inc.
  • now part of Avid Technology.
  • Images in the Targa Graphic format might be
stored in their raw form or with compression,
which might be preferred for icons, line drawings
    and other simple images.
  • This format is often seen associated with image
    files used in video games.
