FALL OF VIJAYANAGAR EMPIRE
There were many artists lived under the support
of the Vijayanagar Empire.
The painters had some importance during that
period but many were not that much recognized.
Once the Vijayanagar Empire was defeated, most of
the painters dispatched and moved to various
places.

NAYAKAS
Some painters moved to Thanjavur and worked under
the patronage of the Nayakas Empire.
The Nayakas gave the painters a high respect and
many painters got their recognition during his
period.
This is the time where the Thanjavur paintings
started its rise.

MARATHAS
The Nayakas were defeated by the Marathas and the
Thanjavur came under the patronage of the
Marathas.
The Marathas were more passionate towards
paintings than the Nayakas. So the painters got
more recognition than during the Nayakas period.

PAINTINGS
As the Marathas were more passionate towards
paintings, many paintings were asked to be drawn

GODs during that period were drawn.

CURRENT

paintings, now let us see some important things
of the current Thanjavur paintings.
The Thanjavur paintings are drawn on the white
cloth which is placed on the wooden board.
Initially the rough diagram is drawn and the
white chalk powder solution is coated over the
cloth and then the main diagram is drawn.
Once after all the painting works are done, they
will go for the decoration work by placing the
colourful stones on the paintings.
The thing which adds up greatness to the painting
is the gold foil finish which is made at the
last.
Many gods are being drawn nowadays.
