Title: Neurodevelopmental Study in HIV-infected Ugandan Children

1
Neurodevelopmental Study in HIV-infected Ugandan
Children
  • Hannah Boal
  • 1/11/07

2
Background
  • HIV encephalopathy is a major cause of morbidity
    from HIV-1 infection
  • Children with advanced HIV-disease are profoundly
    neurodevelopmentally delayed
  • Data about those with mild disease are sparse
  • Most data based on subtype B infection in the US
    and Western Europe

3
Study Aims
  • Determine if HIV-infected Ugandan children with
mild or no immune suppression are
    neurodevelopmentally delayed compared to HIV(-)
    children.
  • Determine, within HIV-infected Ugandan children
with mild or no immune suppression, the
    predictors of neurocognitive dysfunction (HIV
plasma RNA level, HIV subtype, HIV DNA level).

4
Method
  • Subjects
  • 150 CHAMP children, CD4gt15, ART naïve
  • 80 UO1 children
  • Patients pre-selected , matched for age- and
    gender
  • Testing scheduled around routine visits
  • Performed by Paul Bangriana and his assistants

5
Neuropsychological Testing
  • Parent Questionnaire and Home Evaluation
  • Neuropsychological Testing
  • 2 to 6 yo
  • Mullen Early Learning Scales (cognitive/motor)
  • Early Childhood Vigilance Test (attention)
  • Color-Object Association Test (memory)
  • 6-10 yo
  • Modified Kaufman Assessment Battery (cognitive)
  • TOVA (visual and auditory attention)
  • Bruininks-Oseretsky (motor)
  • Testing should take 1 - 3 hours depending on the
    age of the child

6
Time Line
  • UCSF IRB contingent approval
  • Nov-Dec
  • MUREC/UNCST application review
  • Subject selection, scheduling
  • Dec-onward
  • Enrollment/testing
  • Initially one child tested per day, with an
increase in frequency as personnel and space
    allows
