  • Anita Brookner on the Orange PrizeIm against
positive discrimination. If women want equality,
which they do, and which they have largely
achieved, they shouldnt ask for separate
treatment. Publishing is an open forum. If a
book is good, it will get published. If it is
    good it will get reviewed.

  • Anis ShivaniAnn Patchett has wondered how
differently she might have written this book
after the events of September 11. Luckily for
us, she finished the book by May 2001, and
succeeded in giving us an honest look at the
common humanity that bridges the roles ostensibly
played by terrorists and hostages, and other
supposed opposites of the same kind, without
being affected by the false sentiments produced
    copiously by official culture.

  • Barb ShoupRead this book! I say, when the
subject of Sept. 11 comes up. Because it is so
important to remember that hostage, terrorist,
you, meeach of us has a rich, complex,
surprising secret soul. Chekov was right that
soul is unknowable. But Bel Canto gives the
reader a kind of map for imagining the souls, the
inner lives of real peoplethose we know and
those well never know but whose actions affect
    our lives profoundly.

  • AnonymousAnn Patchetts latest novel provides
an intriguing setting for a fascinating
exploration of the human spirit. The plot is
based on an actual event that resonates all the
more in our post 9-11 psyche. Terror abounds but
music and love conquer. The plot is unnerving,
the characters are irresistible and the writing
is nuanced and moving. Bel Canto seems perfect
for summer 2002, imaginative, authentic, and
    uplifting.
