  • The advisers listed above are available to
assist you with your college-level advising
    needs

7
Make sure you have a Gatorlink account
  • You will need a GatorLink account to access your
    e-mail, grades, transcripts, make tuition
    payments, etc.
  • Make GatorLink your primary e-mail account. This
is the best way the department, university and
CoE can contact you regarding important
    information (e.g., registration, drop/add,
    critical dates, opportunities, etc.)

8
NRE Academic Advising
  • Department policy is for professors to advise
students. Students are assigned to professors
based on the first letter of their last name
  • CoE places a registration hold every semester
(check GatorLink e-mail account for message
indicating hold), so that you will meet with your
adviser to discuss next term courses/registration
  • When this happens, immediately make an
appointment to speak to your adviser (See List
    of Undergraduate Advisers)
  • Pick up a Course Approval Form from the main
NRE office (Room 202). Some professors already
have copies of this form with them

9
NRE Academic Advising(continued)
  • Take form to your adviser/professor, discuss
courses, list courses on form, get
    adviser/professor signature on form
  • Bring Course Approval Form to Ines
    Aviles-Spadoni (Academic Coordinator). She will
    lift your hold
  • You can then register for classes

10
NRE Undergraduate Adviser List
  • Adviser Student Last Name
  • Dr. Anghaie A,H
  • Dr. Bolch B,R
  • Dr. Dugan D,J,Y
  • Dr. Gilland E,M
  • Dr. Haghighat C,P
  • Dr. Hintenlang S
  • Dr. Vernetson G,L,V
  • Dr. Baciak F,N,T
  • Dr. Sjoden O,W

11
Student Responsibilities (Academic Advising)
  • Maintain GatorLink e-mail to read official
    university and department correspondence
  • Meet with department adviser on regular basis,
especially if unsure about major and career
    options
  • Review degree audit on ISIS each semester (shows
    remaining degree requirements)
  • SEEK ADVISEMENT WHEN IN ACADEMIC DIFFICULTY
(e.g., below 2.0 GPA, doing poorly in
    critical-tracking course)
  • Maintain personal academic records, including
catalog of year of admission to UF, transcripts,
    degree audits, evaluation of transfer
  • of work, and notes from previous advising
    sessions
  • Source Undergraduate Catalog
  • Anytime you are confused about academic
requirements or progress toward a degree, we
encourage you to meet with your appointed
department academic adviser or visit with your
    primary department contact person (Ines
    Aviles-Spadoni) for more information

12
CoE Drop Policy
  • Only two drops are permitted in lower division
    (lt60 hours completed at UF)
  • Only two drops in upper division (60 or more hrs
    at UF)
  • A student with 15 credits or more will be
permitted an extra drop if drop is completed by
end of 7th week of class and if the remaining
    credits are 12 or more
  • Drops beyond those already listed above will be
approved only when there are circumstances beyond
    a students control

13
Combined BS/MS Program
  • Also known as the 4/1 program, this program
allows students who qualify academically to get a
head start on their graduate education. Graduate
courses (up to 12 credit hours) are taken while
in the junior and senior year and are
double-counted into the masters program, thus
cutting down the time it takes to complete both
    degrees.

14
Combined BS/MS Program(continued)
  • Some Advantages
  • Cost to MS degree is reduced because up to 12
  • credits are automatically added to the
    masters degree transcript
  • Students can get head start on MS thesis or
  • MS research project
  • More time to decide whether to pursue grad degree
    or professional degree
  • Students are more marketable because many
employers now require a masters degree for
    entry-level positions

15
Combined BS/MS Program(continued)
  • Requirements/Procedure
  • Take GRE as soon as possible (before or early in
your junior year). Minimum score is 1100 (verbal
    quantitative)
  • GPA must be at least 3.3 or better
  • Talk to your UG adviser and/or a Graduate
    Coordinator

16
Combined BS/MS Program(continued)
  • Requirements/Procedure (continued)
  • Submit a Combined Masters Bachelor Degree
Request form (see Ines Aviles-Spadoni). You and
your adviser must discuss graduate level courses
    to be double counted.
  • Decide what graduate program and area of
    specialization (nuclear engineering, medical
physics, health physics) you are interested in
and talk to a professor or professors in that
area and inquire about space in his/her program
    and assistantship availability

17
Combined BS/MS Program(continued)
  • Things to consider
  • Bright Futures Scholarship Program will fund
graduate tuition at the undergraduate level -
students are responsible for paying only the
    difference between undergraduate and graduate
    tuition.
  • Florida Pre-Paid College Tuition Program will
fund the first 120 credit hours, covering
graduate courses taken toward the undergraduate
degree at the undergraduate level. Financial aid
may be available for the graduate degree portion
    of the program.

copy and hard copy) she will keep copy for your
file and make sure it is included in faculty
    meeting agenda
  • Petition will be discussed and voted on at
    regular monthly faculty meetings
  • Student will be notified of outcome via e-mail
