Jackson Brings Changes to the White House

• Jackson was the 1st official Democrat to run
  hold the office of the Presidency
• Jackson won the Election of 1828 for several
  reasons
• He was anti-establishment
• He was a western military war hero
• He believed that the common man should be more
  involved in the political process

Jacksonian Democracy

• Main goals
• Pushed for more relaxed voting laws in regards to
  land ownership
• Opposed any form of National Bank
• Continue to pursue Manifest Destiny
• Incorporate an Anti-establishment Cabinet
• Use the power of the VETO to push his political
  agenda

The Spoils System

• This is the process in which Jackson gives high
  positions within the govt in exchange for their
  support throughout the campaigns
• Jackson believed that this would help expand
  democracy and would allow new voices in govt to
  promote reform

The Indian Removal Act(1832)

• The attempts of Native Americans to remain on
  their ancestral lands came into conflict w/
  governments aim to remove them from settled
  areas in the East resettle in the West

Worcester vs. Georgia

• The Cherokees were ordered to leave their lands
  in Georgia
• After they refused, an earlier S. C. case ruled
  that the Cherokees could stay until they
  voluntarily ceded their lands to the U.S.
• In 1832, the Court declared that the Cherokees
  were their own sovereign people, and they did not
  have to leavein Worcester vs. Georgia

Jacksons Response

• He ignored the Courts decision
• He had little sympathy for the Cherokees
• Seminoles, Choctaw, Creek, Chickasaw Cherokees
  were all forced west

Impact The Trail of Tears

• Appx. 4,000 Cherokees perished
• Ntl Guard was used to forced them west
• Most died from disease, dehydration hypothermia
• 17,000 Cherokees were relocated to OK Territory
