DATA STRUCTURES
Electronic Communication
11UCC Company Prefix
- A number assigned to you by the UCC which
identifies you, uniquely, anywhere in the world
12Global Trade Item Number
(GTIN)
- Umbrella term including the following data
structures - EAN/UCC-14
- EAN/UCC-13
- UCC-12
- EAN/UCC-8
- Important note
- Nothing has really changed. GTIN is a term
only! - The U.P.C. will not go away.

Data Structure (GTIN as UCC-12)
14Global Location Number (GLN)
- A global standard for collaborative commerce
co-managed by the UCC - An identification number of the EAN.UCC system,
therefore unique and unambiguous - A 13-digit number that identifies
- physical locations
- functional entities
- legal entities
15Using GLNs A Probable Scenario

GLN Data
16GLN Benefits
- The use of GLNs provide organizations with a
method of identifying locations, within and
outside their organization that is - Simple...an easily defined data structure with
integrity checking that facilitates processing
and transmission of data - UniqueGLNs are unique worldwide
- Rule basedEAN.UCC System

22POS History
- Since 1977 there have been different standards
for identifying products - U.P.C. (12 digits) - U.S. and Canada
- EAN-8 (8 digit) and EAN-13 (13 digits)- outside
of North America

262005 Sunrise
- In 1997 the UCC announced that Effective January
1, 2005 all U.S. and Canadian companies need to
be able to - scan and process
- EAN-8 (8 digit)
- U.P.C. (12 digit)
- EAN-13 (13 digit)
- data at point of sale.
27IMPORTANT NOTE
- After January 1, 2005, the UCC may need to begin
issuing EAN-13 Company Prefixes. This will
increase the number of EAN-13 numbers in the
supply chain and create additional customer
service problems.
282005 Sunrise - Benefits
- Expanding your system capability to process trade
items that carry EAN-8 and EAN-13 symbols as well
as the 12- digit U.P.C. enables you to handle a
greater range of global products and provides a
single, seamless global standard.
29Suppliers/Retailers/DistributorsSummary
- In addition to the 12-digit U.P.C., ensure that
POS equipment and systems, inventory systems,
item catalogues, and program interfaces can also
handle 8-digit and 13-digit EAN numbers

Global Perspective
37UNSPSC
- UNSPSC
- United Nations Standard Product and Service Code
- The UNSPSC code is an open, global, multi-sector
standard - It provides a global classification framework
- GPC (Global Product Classification)
- Provides detailed classification attributes and
values built upon the UNSPSC framework

41Innovation to Implementation
42Role of EPCglobalGuiding Principles
- Cheap, high performance RFID tags and readers
enable the EPCglobal vision - Tags are simple Most information held in the
network - Serialized items can be individually tracked
across traditional trading boundaries in a
standardized way - Increased accuracy and visibility at all points
in the supply chain - Enables Track Trace functionality
- Pedigree, counterfeit protection, etc.
43Bridging the Great Radio Frequency
Identification (RFID) Divide
- RFID and EPC technology can address limitations
of bar codes - Move from closed systems to open applications
- Open, global standards needed to break the
barriers and remove the roadblocks
Chip
Antenna
44A Standards Strategy for RFID and EPC
- A global approach by
- Uniform Code Council
- EAN International
- Focus on open supply chain challenges and
opportunities - Promote broad adoption
- Drive economies of scale
- Lower financial barriers
- Increase collective value for entire user
community
45What is EPC?
- EPC is the business application of RFID
- technology to the supply chain
- Electronic Product Code is the unique object
identifier (license plate) on the tag - A pointer to information about the item
- Contains
- Header
- EPC Manager Number
- Object Class
- Serial Number
- GTIN and other EAN.UCC keys can be used to
construct unique EPC numbers

53Key Thought..
- The EAN.UCC system is unique in its emphasis on
the link between the physical product and the
data flow.
