Carbon Monoxide Information Carbon Monoxide is a
highly poisonous gas that is colorless, odorless,
tasteless and virtually impossible to detect.
Common sources in the home include hot air
furnaces, space heaters and natural gas ranges.
Massachusetts law requires carbon monoxide
detectors on every level of a home. On levels
with sleeping areas, the alarms must be placed
within ten (10) feet of the bedroom
doors. Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning The
symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are similar
to the flu. A person may experience headaches,
dizziness, weakness, sleepiness, nausea,
confusion, tightness of the chest, fluttering of
the heart, redness of the skin and loss of muscle
control. Ways to protect your family Before the
heating season begins, have your heating system
checked by a licensed professional heating
contractor. Check chimneys or flues for debris,
birds' nests or other blockage. Be sure all
space heaters and woodstoves are in good
condition and used in strict compliance with the
manufacturer's instructions, with adequate
ventilation and plenty of fresh air. Never use a
gas range for heating. Also, never burn coal or
charcoal in an enclosed space. Never leave a car
idling in a closed garage. Install a
carbon-monoxide detector to monitor the air for
high levels of carbon monoxide. Be sure the
detector you buy is "UL LISTED." When adding a
coal- or wood-burning stove, be sure it is
professionally installed and vented. Never block
or seal shut vents and exhaust ducts of
appliances such as water heaters, ranges and
clothes dryers.
Halloween Safety Never let your child
trick-or-treat alone. If they are old enough to
trick or treat without parents, have at least 2
buddies go with them. Make it a rule that your
child waits until they get home and you check the
candy before it is eaten. Thrown away any
questionable items. As always, ensure your
children are very cautious of strangers. Tell
your children to accept treats only in the
doorway. Never go inside a house. Visit only
houses where the lights are on.

Fall Reminders Garden- now is the time to plant
your spring flowering bulbs for a great spring
garden. Daylight saving time Daylight savings
time ends on Sunday November 4, 2007. Remember
to turn your clocks back 1 hour. Daylight
savings is also a great reminder to replace
batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
