Podcasting
  • 29 November 2006

Definitions
  • Wikipedia
  • A podcast is a multimedia file distributed over
the Internet using syndication feeds, for
playback on mobile devices and personal
computers. Like 'radio', it can mean both the
content and the method of delivery. Though
podcasters' web sites may also offer direct
download or streaming of their content, a podcast
is distinguished from other digital audio formats
by its ability to be downloaded automatically
using software capable of reading feed formats
    such as RSS or Atom.
  • For some pundits, downloaded audio is more
important defining characteristic than RSS feed
    for others, iPodbroadcast is key

3
Part of a complete ecology
  • Content creation
  • Encoding/editing
  • Publication to a podcasting server
  • Locating podcasts
  • Download and viewing of content

4
Our likely focus for today
  • Introductions
  • Information sharing what is UO currently doing
    about podcasting?
  • What is relationship at UO between podcasting and
    classroom lecture recording? More generally,
    what are high-leverage educational applications?
  • What directions should UO take in podcasting?
  • What are next steps for this technical group?

5
Some examples of UO initiatives
  • Journalism see podcast at http//jcomm.uoregon.ed
    u/weblog/achinn/
  • Media Services UO Channel, classroom recording,
    etc. JD Hauger
  • CET JQ training faculty in audio
    self-recording blackboard podcasting plugin
coming soon experiment with Jane Ritter (CIS)
    iTunesU?
  • Education video-recording student work Mark
    Horney
  • Business Mark Thomas class lectures uploaded to
    google
  • AAA Chris Jones
  • Law School Dennis Bishop
  • Etc.

6
CET activities
  • Current use case we support
  • Faculty recording lectures or annotations
  • Voice recording using digital recorders checked
    out from media services
  • Encoding as mp3 minimal editing using
    garageband, audacity, etc.
  • Publishing as attachments in Blackboard, maybe
with separate PPT as supplementary material
  • Soon Blackboard addon that provides RSS feed

7
iTunesU
  • Addresses the publishing part of podcasting
  • Closely tied to iTunes as preferred player
    software
  • Weve been trying to negotiate an acceptable
license for months. Per Deb Carver
  • The negotiations with Apple over iTunesU
    basically broke down a couple
  • of weeks ago, after months of back and forth.
    Apple was insisting on
  • using UO content rather freely, and without
    prior notification or
  • permission. Our counsel would not agree to this.
    OSU was also
  • negotiating, but I believe they have dropped it
    as well. Since then,
  • Apple has said they have a "new and improved"
    agreement which we should
  • see in a week or so (but they have been VERY
    slow in delivery and
  • response). Although there are many ways to
    accomplish this service,
  • many of us were focused on exactly the advantage
    that Andre mentions,
  • i.e. a familiar and consistent platform.

8
Ritter podcasting experiment
  • Funded by Academic Affairs as collaboration
    between CIS and CET
  • Focus is on pedagogical issues and on mechanics
of unmediated video recording of class review
    sessions
