About Muscle Relaxant

• Muscle relaxants fall under two categories
• Antispasmodics- Centrally acting skeletal muscle
  relaxants (SMRs) used to treat muscle spasm.
• Antispastics used to treat muscle spasticity.

What is Muscle spasm?

• Sudden, involuntary contractions of a muscle or
  group of muscles.
• Caused by too much muscle strain.
• Symptoms include lower back pain, neck pain, and
  fibromyalgia.

What is Muscle spasticity?

• Causes stiffness, rigidity, or tightness
• Caused by injury to parts of the brain or spinal
  cord
• Conditions include multiple sclerosis (MS),
  cerebral palsy, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
  (ALS)

Antispasmodics Centrally acting skeletal muscle
relaxants (SMRs)

• Help relieve muscle spasms.
• They cause a sedative effect or prevent your
  nerves from sending pain signals to the brain.
• Use these Muscle Relaxant drugs for up to 2 or 3
  weeks.
• Drugs include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory
  drugs (nsaids)- ibuprofen (advil, motrin),
  naproxen (aleve) acetaminophen- tylenol, or a
  combination of both.

Antispastics Muscle Relaxant

• Antispastics are used to treat muscle spasticity.
• They should not be used to treat muscle spasms.
• Drugs include Baclofen (Lioresal), Dantrolene
  (Dantrium), Diazepam (Valium).
