Title: Laptops in Nebula

1
Laptops in Nebula
  • Security, Patches and Updates, and Network
    Connectivity

2
Laptops require more attention than desktops
  • Physical Security
  • Data Security
  • Patches and Updates
  • Network Connectivity

3
Physical Security
  • Laptops can be stolen more easily
  • Their small size and portability is a convenience
    and an increased risk

4
Data Security
  • Locally saved data
  • Since laptops are not always connected to the
network H and I drives, it is tempting to store
potentially sensitive data on the local hard
    drive

5
Data Security
  • Updates and Patches
  • Since laptops may not be connected to a network
24/7, they may not receive updates and patches in
    a timely manner

6
Connectivity
  • Nebula computers expect to be on the Nebula
network 24/7 for updates, patches and reports
  • This is not always the case for laptops

7
Connectivity
  • Most laptops travel on different networks
  • On campus between wired and wireless, from
office to conference room to site visit and on
different subnets in the same building
  • Off campus home, hotel, conference room, hotspot

8
Connectivity
  • Or they are not on any network
  • Locked in a cabinet or desk for weeks at a time
    between use (a no-no!)
  • On an airplane or outside of wired or wireless
    coverage

9
What you can do!
10
Physical Security
  • Always keep your laptop with you or in a safe
    location
  • Use laptop cable locks

11
Physical Security
  • Register your laptop with UWPD
  • http//www.washington.edu/admin/police/prevention/
  • Insure your laptop with the Office of Risk
    Management
  • http//www.washington.edu/admin/rmequip/

12
Data Security
  • When possible dont save data to the laptop hard
    drive (the C drive)
  • Use the SSH Tectia Secure FTP client to transfer
updated files to Bank (aka H and I)

13
Data Security
  • Get access to the network H and I drives by
using the Nebula Virtual Private Network (VPN)
  • http//www.washington.edu/nebula/vpn.html
  • Use Remote Desktop to connect to a Nebula
    computer on campus
  • Start -gt Programs -gt Accessories -gt
    Communications -gt Remote Desktop Connection

14
Patches and Updates
  • When not in use, keep your laptop turned on,
plugged in, logged out and connected to the UW
    network
  • Disable sleep, standby or hibernation modes

15
Patches and Updates
  • When its not possible to be continually
connected to the UW network, regularly check for
    Windows Updates

16
Patches and Updates
  • Look for the Yellow Shield in the System Tray -
Updates are ready for your computer.
  • A laptop connected to the internet anywhere
    should get updates automatically

17
Installing the updates
18
McAfee VirusScan updates
  • Check that McAfee VirusScan is getting updates
  • Right-click on the VirusScan icon, the blue and
white shield with the red V
  • Click on About VirusScan Enterprise
  • The Created on date should be within a few
    days of the current date
  • If not, right-click the VirusScan shield icon and
    click on Update now

19
Getting Connectivity
  • On campus
  • Wired ethernet, should be no problem
  • CC managed University of Washington wireless
    access, should be no problem
  • Other wireless networks (see off campus)

20
Getting Connectivity
  • Off campus
  • Can use local account to log into laptop
    (without disabling radio)
  • Will need to disable wireless radio before
logging in with Nebula login and password
  • Will need to use Remote Desktop or Nebula VPN for
    Nebula resources

21
Before that next trip or conference
  • Plug the laptop into the UW network at least over
    night
  • Log in with your Nebula account while connected
    to campus ethernet
  • Unplug from the ethernet and log on again with
both your Nebula and local accounts

22
Nebula Training Room
  • Nebula training room is also being equipped as a
    laptop testing and training environment
  • Equipped with DSL, wireless and dial-up modem
    access for off campus simulation
