Structure
  • 12 week clerkship- 2/3 in hospital and 1/3 clinic
  • Some pilot programs for more hospital time may be
    available
  • Most Seattle sites have 3 four week blocks, one
    of which is in clinic
  • WWAMI sites- generally 6 weeks WWAMI and 6 weeks
    in Seattle. WWAMI placement can be either first
    or second 6 weeks. Billings, Boise and Spokane
    offer 12-week tracks.

  • HMC - Call every 5th night with short call
  • one senior resident, 2 interns, 2 students, 1

  • UWMC and VA - Call every 4th
  • One senior resident, one intern, 1-2 students,

  • Virginia Mason Admit on average 2 out of 3 days
  • Overnight call 2 days a month. One resident,
    1-2 interns, 1 student and hospitalist attending.

Seattle Ambulatory Sites
  • HMC, VA, UWMC University residency clinics with
    opportunities for home visits (VA), indigent care
    (HMC), virology (UW) Two students per site.
  • UWPN Shoreline/Kent and Polyclinic one-on-one
    teaching by attending One student per site.

  • Boise
  • 2 months inpatient, I month clinic
  • Call every 5th night with the resident/intern
    team. 4 6 students
  • Madigan
  • Fixed call days- Tues/Sat or Mon/Fri
  • 1 senior resident 1-2 interns. Option for 1
    month inpatient, 1 month clinic. 2 4 students
  • Spokane
  • 2 months inpatient, I month clinic. Flexible
    call schedule. 4 students.

Didactics
  • Weekly clerkship lecture in Seattle, Thursday
    AMs. Digitally taped for students at WWAMI.
  • Clerkship Site Director didactics weekly
  • Chief Medical Resident problem solving/physical
    diagnosis rounds
  • Team lunch conferences, x-ray rounds, attending
    rounds

Hours
  • 4 days off per month while on Seattle/Boise/Spokan
    e in-patient rotation. Call is taken with your
    team.
  • School of Medicine work hours policy No more
    than 80 hours of awake time in the hospital or
    clinic per week.
  • Weekends are free on Seattle ambulatory block
  • WWAMI very flexible call. Take call with your
    attending.
  • Contact Student Program 4 6 weeks before start
    date for weekend (Sat./Sunday) time off request.

What Do I Need?
  • Pager Seattle students are expected to provide
    their own pager. Some WWAMI sites provide pagers
    (it is okay to check ahead of time).
  • Credentialing paperwork. Pay close attention to
    forms required for your site. Forms are required
    to be submitted two weeks prior to your start
    date.
  • Textbook (Internal Medicine Clerkship Guide,
    Paauw DS, Mosby 2003)
  • Stethoscope
  • WWAMI Laptop. Review WWAMI housing description
    on the clerkship website for details.

Evaluation
  • Clinical performance is evaluated by interns,
    residents and attendings.
  • National Board of Medical Examiners Internal
    Medicine Subject exam in 2009.
