2Bandwidth Definition by Wikipedia
Bandwidth is a measure of frequency range and is
typically measured in hertz. Bandwidth is a
central concept in many fields, including
information theory, radio communications, signal
processing, and spectroscopy. Bandwidth is
related to channel capacity for information
transmission and often the two can be confused.
In particular, in common usage "bandwidth" also
refers to data (information) transmission rates
when communicating over certain media or devices.
3Bandwidth efficiency in Web Browsing
- 200KByte Wiki web page downloaded in 5 sec
320Kbps perceived download rate - But
- URL resolution with DNS and transmission delay to
reach the site - HTTP TCP session establishment delay
- PC HW processing delay, OS processing delay,
Application processing delay - Total delay 2 sec
- Effective download time 3 sec, resulting in
effective download rate 533Kbps - In Australia, majority broadband traffic web
browsing - Majority web browsing half the time spent on
delay, the other half retrieving content 200KB
Tested on HP Pavillion, Windows Vista, Intel
Core 2 T7200 _at_2GHz, 1G RAM, 8Mbps ADSL2
4Bandwidth Efficiency in Web Browsing
True broadband ? web browsing only application !
- Assumption
- No network congestion
- Software processing, routing, propagation delay
kept constant
5Agenda

9Bandwidth Content Analysis
- Media content download when will local media
content be widely available? - Is it ready when infrastructure is ready?
- Is it ready when users demand it?
- Will users demand it if current broadband
experience is average? - Offering SD-TV but not offering HD-TV?
- Would content sharing be legalised for
Peer-to-Peer?
IPTV and Local Media Content Download drives
bandwidth demand
10Bandwidth demands on Network
- Demand for higher network bandwidth from
- Increasing bandwidth per user
- Scaling the number of users
- Combination of both
Presents different requirements on network
11Bandwidth demands on Network
- Physical transmission infrastructure
- Service network
- Edge and Core network
- Inter-provider trunks
- Access Network
12Service Network
- Capacity and performance upgrade on user AAA and
security - PPPoE, DHCP, DNS, CA, EPG, DPI, IDS/IPS
performance - Peer-to-peer application and flow
inspection/sampling - Distributed architecture for AAA and security
- Content attachment point, content caching point
- Bandwidth upgrade to the content locations is
required in all centralised content models - Distributed local content
- Impact of scaling
- Sensitive to number of sessions, states and
connections
Demand for bandwidth drives capacity and
performance upgrade here
13Core and Edge network
- All traffic must traverse the edge and core
network - Efficient use of edge and core bandwidth
- Traffic engineering hub-spoke and
Point-to-Point - Service differentiation
- Careful placement of AAA and content in the
network - Impact of scaling
- Sensitive to both capacity and connection spaces
Demand for bandwidth drives Capacity and
performance upgrade here
14Inter-provider infrastructure upgrade
- In Australia
- Dominated by foreign content
- Lack of local content
- International bandwidth is obvious bottleneck
- Extensive caching of foreign content
- Impact of scaling
- Sensitive to bandwidth capacity demand
Must encourage Local Content to boost true
broadband usage Demand for bandwidth drives
significant inter-provider upgrade
15Access Bandwidth Upgrade
Copper Access
Fibre Access
Browsing, IM, VPN, VoIP, Video calls
HD-IPTV, Local media content
Internet download, SD-IPTV, Gaming
Media content download/sharing
HD-IPTV, Local Media content download
Peer2Peer Content sharing, local media content
download
16Access networks upgrade dependent on
- Content type offered
- Local content
- Geographical reach
- Regulation on peer-to-peer sharing
- Strategic investment
- Fast access to content
- Fast service turn on
- Competitive strategies
- Little effect on scaling end-points/subscribers
Infrastructure readiness
Most business case sensitive Differentiator -
Infrastructure readiness
17What about Business Bandwidth?
- Point-to-Point
- ATM/Frame Relay migration ? Ethernet
- Do businesses know what to do with the sudden
increase of bandwidth? - Security new multimedia application trade off
- Point-to-Multipoint
- Existing IP-VPN customers
- No major killer app push for significant increase
in bandwidth - Introduction of Metro-Ethernet VPLS, marketing
positioning of lower cost higher bandwidth
product? - Heavily promote low cost storage solutions and
applications
Observation incremental bandwidth upgrade,
Storage solutions may push higher demand
18Findings and Summary
- Infrastructure readiness ? Customer stickiness,
more revenue per customer, increase customer base - True broadband applications IPTV (SD/HD), Local
and P2P Media Content - Demand for Bandwidth ? capacity and performance
upgrade - Transmission infrastructure
- Service network
- Edge and Core routing infrastructure
- Inter-provider infrastructure
- Access network infrastructure may require upgrade
- From copper to fibre
- Application, competitive strategies, commercial
dependencies - Infrastructure readiness differentiator
- Business bandwidth contribution is dwarfed by
mass residential bandwidth
